Looking at metal artifacts excavated in our country by each material, artifacts with diverse materials such as gold, silver, bronze, alloy and iron have been excavated, and of these, copper alloys bronze and iron constitute the largest proportion. So, the most dangerous threat to the existence of metal artifacts spanning from excavated relics to handed-down ones could be the process of corrosion and as a matter of fact, in all phases before and after excavation, metal artifacts are subject to natural corrosion. Though there might be some differences between metal materials, corrosion in metal artifacts causes, from its beginning, the transformation of their shapes as well as the basic problem in preserving the artifacts, and therefore dealing with corrosion from the early stage must be very important process for the preservation of metal artifacts. Currently, corrosion oxide in bronze and iron artifacts is usually removed using physical methods but if there were chemical methods merely to remove corrosion oxide without damaging not-corroded parts of artifacts, it may be a safer method both to the artifacts and persons dealing with them. For this reason, this study, in an attempt to remove corrosion oxide in metal artifacts in a safer and more effect way, manufactured new acid, neutral and alkaline chemical treatments and applied their diversely-changed compositions to remove corrosion oxide in bronze and iron artifacts, and ultimately aimed at finding out the optimal artefact treatments. For this, the study manufactured normal iron plate and bronze plate containing 21 percent of tin, and corroded the surfaces using nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, and then using treatment made only from chemically safe materials, the study conducted research on process to remove merely corrosion oxide. In the first place, the study observed the surfaces by altering the composition itself and its ratio, and based on this finding, chose solutions with excellent treating effect and then conducted the secondary detailed experiment by increasing the treating time and treating amount. And by applying this to the modern artifacts, study was able to ascertain stability of treatment and treating capability There were 14 methods to compose acid treatment and as a result of the first experiment, removal rate in bronze of Solution No. 8 was up to 80 percent, while that in iron was up to 60 percent. The second detailed experiment showed more than 91.6 percent of corrosion oxide in the surface of the bronze fragment removed and average 93.3 percent in the iron fragment removed. By controlling usage amount of solutions and its treating time, the study found the methods to remove surface oxide while protecting not-corroded parts. There were 16 methods to compose alkaline treatment and as a result of the first experiment, removal rate in both bronze and iron was up to 80 percent. Of these, solutions with excellent treating effect were Solution No. 1000, 1009 and 1015. As a result of the second detailed experiment, No. 1000 had average 90 percent of corrosion oxide in the surface of the bronze fragment removed and average 82.3 percent of the surface of the iron fragment removed. While, No. 1009 had more than average 93.3 percent of corrosion oxide in the surface of the bronze fragment removed and more than average 86.6 percent of the surface of the iron fragment removed. In the meanwhile, No. 1015 showed average more than 88.3 percent and 78.3 percent removed respectively. Given the findings that there remained various corrosion oxides on the surfaces of the fragment corroded by sulfuric acid especially as well a certain amount of corrosion oxide in the fragments corroded by nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, complete treatment of corrosion oxide using these seems to be difficult. There were 56 methods to compose neutral treatment and as a result of the first experiment, removal rate of corrosion oxide in both bronze and iron was up to more than 80 percent. Of these, Of these, solutions with excellent treating effect were Solution No. 101-1 and No. 203-1 with 6.84 and 6.92 of pH respectively. No. 101-1 had average 86.6 percent of corrosion oxide on the surface of the bronze fragment removed and average 90 percent of the surface of the iron fragment removed. While, No. 203-1 showed average 80 percent and 78.3 percent removed respectively. Of these three sorts of treatments, acid Solution No.8, alkali Solution No. 1009 and neutral Solution No. 101-1 were most excellent in each category and of 86 solutions in total, acid Solution No.8 demonstrated the best outcome, suggesting us that the use of this solution could treat all of unstable corroded parts on the surfaces of corrosion oxide through nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. In light of these findings, this study believes that the use of this metal oxide treatment could be applicable to metal surfaces covering from those of excavated metal artifacts to modern handed-down metal artifacts. The study further showed that control of the usage amount and treating time of the solutions depending on the preservation conditions of metal artifacts might allow the removal of unstable oxides while protecting not-corroded metal parts. This methodology, the study believes, can be applied for safe removal of corroded oxide parts and foreign substances in metal cultural assets, ultimately contributing to the preservation of metal cultural assets in the future.
