This study aims to examine the effects of parenting attitudes perceived by elementary school students and self-control on the degree of smart phone use and the mediating effect of self-control in the relationship between parenting attitudes and the degree of smart phone use. For this study, a survey was conducted with 382 fifth and sixth grade students in four elementary schools situated in Incheon, Daegu and Yongin, Gyeonggi-do. For measuring the degree of smart phone use, the 'Smart Phone Addiction Diagnostic Scale for Youth(S-Scale)’ developed by National Information Society Agency(2011) was used and for measuring parenting attitudes, the tool, which was modified by Yim, Seon-hwa(1987), based on the 'Parent-Child Rearing Attitude Perception Test Questionnaire' of Lee, Jong-seung and Oh, Seong-sim(1982), was used. For measuring self-control, also, the scale used by Gottfredson and Hirschi(1990) and Lee, Gye-won(2001)'s tool that reframed the 'Self-Control Rating Scale(SCRS)' of Kim, Hyun-sook(1998), were used. For data analysis, frequency analysis, Cronbach a, descriptive statistics, t test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis were conducted using the SPSS 18.0 program. The major study findings are as follows. First, positive parenting attitudes perceived by elementary school students and self-control had a negative correlation with the degree of smart phone use and as parenting attitudes(affection, autonomy, achievement and rationality) were positively perceived by elementary school students and self-control became higher, the degree of smart phone use declined. Also, there was a positive correlation between positive parenting attitudes and self-control and as parenting attitudes were positively perceived by elementary school students, self-control increased. Second, positive parenting attitudes perceived by elementary school students and self-control negatively influenced the degree of smart phone use and as autonomous and achievement-based parenting attitudes were perceived by elementary school students and self-control became higher, the degree of smart phone use reduced. Third, self-control had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between parenting attitudes(autonomy and control, and achievement and non-achievement) and the degree of smart phone use. This means that parenting attitudes(autonomy and control, and achievement and non-achievement) directly‧indirectly influence the degree of smart phone use by decreasing self-control. This study demonstrates that self-control is an important variable to highly influence the degree of smart phone use by discovering the significant effects of parenting attitudes and self-control on the degree of smart phone use and the mediating role of self-control in the relationship between parenting attitudes and the degree of smart phone use. It is anticipated that these study results can expand the understanding about the degree of smart phone use among elementary school upper graders, which has been relatively less researched and serve as basic data for parent education, child counseling and prevention program development.
