This study investigated the differences in self-esteem, life satisfaction and depression between full-time housewives and working housewives aged over 35 under 60. There are three specific research questions. First, what is the difference in self-esteem between full-time housewives and working housewives? Second, what is the difference in life satisfaction between full-time housewives and working housewives? Third, what is the difference in depression between full-time housewives and working housewives? The subjects of the study were 138 persons in total, and as the tools for measurement, the self-esteemed test developed based on the self-esteem inventory produced by Coopersmith (1967) translated by Kang, Jong-gu (1986), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS); the life satisfaction scale with five questions developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffin (1985) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used. For a basic analysis and comparison of the difference in the average between the groups, a t-test was conducted. As a result of the analysis, first, there was no significant difference in self-esteem between full-time housewives and working housewives, overall. However, it was found that in the domain of self-esteem of the sub-domains, the level of the full-time housewives with the characteristics of the subjects who had a university degree or higher and whose husband had a high income was higher than that of the working housewives. Through this, it is noted that the self-esteem of middle-aged married women was affected by other factors of individual characteristics more than their employment. Second, there was a statistically significant difference in life satisfaction between full-time housewives and working housewives, and full-time housewives had higher life satisfaction than working housewives did. It is interpreted that this was because most of the subjects of sampling relatively were middle-class full-time housewives who had a time for their own and could afford to hobbies, religious life or voluntary work, and meeting for friendship. Third, there was no significant difference in depression between full-time housewives and working housewives. It seems that this was because of the characteristics of the developmental stage of middle-aged women. All of the working housewives who were working for their professional self-growth, self-fulfillment or livelihood, the housewives who were devoted to housework with the income of their husband and full-time housewives who had a job intention, but had difficulty in the blind spot of the labor market after career discontinuity had depression and stress in the process of performing the development tasks of productivity and stagnation. Through the results of this study, it is found that economic stability with the income of their husband has a greater impact on self-esteem and life satisfaction of middle-aged married women than their own personal achievement through employment or self-fulfillment does.
