발광체로는 ECL 효율이 높은 (pq)2Ir(pico) (bis(2-phenylquinoline) iridium(III) picolinic acid)를 이용하였다.

Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) system, consisting of luminophore and electrolyte, has been studied on the various fields such as sensor, immunoassay and light-emitting display. ECL device brings many potential advantages such as low energy consumption, easy fabrication and working on various operating mode (direct current (DC), alternating current (AC)). However, ECL device has been suffered from slow response time and low luminance, compared to LED (light-emitting diode). To overcome these problems, many recent studies have focused on synthesis of new luminophore which has high ECL quantum yield (ΦECL) or used AC-driven operating mode for achieving high brightness as well as fast response time of ECL device. Nevertheless, there are some issues related to decreased ECL intensity and life-time of device with increasing operating time. It is attributed to the working mechanism of ECL device, which is similar to that of bulk electrolysis in electrolytic cell. An excess current of non-faradaic was generated by external electrical energy, and there is also high electrolyte concentration with high electric field at electrode/solution interface. These phenomena caused degradation of device performance due to luminophore decomposition and side reaction at electrode surface. To solve these problems, it should be controlled electrochemical reaction in ECL device by reducing the concentration of electrolyte and modulating the operating condition (i.e. voltage, frequency, driven mode). In this letter, we controlled electrochemical reaction associated with kinetic and diffusion-limited reaction in ECL device by using various concentration of electrolyte and operating mode for high and stable of ECL emission. For the purpose of this study, based on self-annihilation pathway, ECL devices of sandwich configuration were fabricated with indium tin oxide(ITO)/glass substrates as an anode and cathode electrode, respectively. (pq)2Ir(pico) with high ECL efficiency was used as a luminophore. LiClO4 in propylene carbonate(PC) was chosen an electrolyte, which has been generally studied in lithium ion battery. As a result, the concentration of electrolyte effected on the diffusion of (pq)2Ir(pico) and operating conditions to the device affected on kinetic of electrode reaction between electrode and (pq)2Ir(pico). In particular, ECL intensity as well as life-time of the device was improved by a controlled concentration of LiClO4 and AC-driven mode.
