In a modern society, energy consumption in building sector takes large portion of the total energy consumption, and it keeps increasing. Therefore, accurage load forecasting in a building is one of important basic works to manage energy consumption in the building. Meanwhile microgrids, which is a small power system that balances the supply and demands in the region, become more popular in recent years, so research on load forecasting in the small area as well as that in national wide are also important. Although previous research on the load forecasting has more focused on the national wide scale, research on load forecasting for microgrid has been recently highlighted. In this study, we propose an artificial neural network (ANN)-based short-term load forecasting method for campus buildings. At first, we investigate important variables which have high correlation to the power load by analyzing past load and weather information. Then, some of variables are selected as input parameters to the proposed ANN. Since the load patterns of weekdays and weekends are very different, different ANNs for them are used to improve the accuracy of forecasting. The proposed ANN-based load forecasting method is verified by actual power consumption data of Soongsil University campus. Through the evaluation, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms a previous microgrid forecasting method based on Self Organizing Map (SOM) in terms of mean absolute percentage error (MAPE).
