Motion control systems (MCS) have been widely used in various industrial fields and are becoming important driving components for the next industrial revolution. Guaranteeing isochronous transfer of control commands is an essential function for networked MCS. Even if the adoption of real-time Ethernet (RTE) technologies may be profitable in guaranteeing deterministic transfer of control messages, unpredictable behavior of software in the motion controller often results in unexpectedly large deviation in control message transmission interval. This deviation will leads to the degradation of Quality of Control (QoC). This Ph.D dissertation presents a simple and efficient heuristic to guarantee the end-to-end isochronous control with very small actuation jitter. The key idea is to adjust the phase offset of control message transmission time in the motion controller by investigating the runtime timing property of control task. We performed a pre-runtime analysis to determine a safe, reliable phase offset of control task and implemented a framework to apply the phase offset to the runtime code by extending an open source IEC 61131-3 IDE. Our framework also includes a GUI analyzer which providing an useful information to the application developers. For the verifying the effectiveness of our approach, we constructed an EtherCAT based motion control system testbed and performed extensive experiments on the testbed. The evaluation results show that our heuristic is highly effective under various configurations of control period, and the number of motor drives. Without any kernel-level modification and customized hardware, our heuristic can bound successive actuation jitters within 1%-2% of the control cycle time even on a low-performance embedded controller and provide performances comparable to or even better than that of a commercial controller. In addition, we propose a motion runtime software model that aims to utilize the computing power of multi-core motion controller. With shared data structure based on CiA 402 servo drive profile, we extended the single-threaded implementation of motion runtime to multi-threaded implementation supporting for multi-core architecture. Proposed software model includes several optimization techniques to improve the real time properties in Linux environment. We also have integrated our software model with an industrial compliant IDE for automatic runtime code generation. For the performance evaluation, we constructed a test-bed consisting of a motion controller with Preempt-RT Linux based dual-core industrial PC and a 3 axis industrial robot platform. The experimental results show that the actuation time difference between axes is 10 ns in average and bounded up to 689 ns under 1000 us control period. We observed that the isolation of runtime environment can greatly reduce the actuation jitters on multi-core motion controller. Moreover, proposed runtime software model with our heuristic guarantees higher level of isochronous control by minimizing the unexpected interference.
