Demand for urban agriculture is increasing as one of the solutions to problems caused by industrialization, urbanization. However, little research on soils used for urban agriculture, which have completely different characteristics from conventional upland soils. In this study, 75 soil samples collected from the areas used for urban agriculture in Seoul and its vicinity in 2015 and 2016 analyzed for their physico-chemical characteristics. Soil profile description for 8 pits in 5 areas used for urban agricultural in Seoul was also conducted to classify soils. The average of pH of the 75 soil samples was higher than that of upland soils in Korea, 6.3. All of the EC1:5 of the analyzed soil samples were lower than EC1:5 of the average of the upland soils in Korea, 0.64 dS m-1. Results of the soil profile description for 8 pits showed that all of the soils described in this study were imported from outside, not naturally developed soil. Some soils had even foreign materials like municipal waste. These imported materials were thought to affect soil characteristics of the original soils. The heavy metal contents of all the studied soils were lower than the Korean warning standard. Results of the classification of the soils in 8 pits based on WRB classification system showed that all the urban soils in this study belong to Anthrosols. They have very different soil characteristics from those of conventional upland soils. It is considered that the management plan for the soils used for urban agriculture should be prepared differently for maintaining sustainable soil health through systematic investigation.
