In Tongyeong coast, the concentrations of acid volatile sulfide and organic matter (units: mg/g dw) in sediments were in the range of not detected-0.514 (average 0.11) for AVS, 8.6-15.6 (11.0) for TOC, 1.1-2.1 (1.4) for TN. and the concentrations of metal contaminants (units: mg/kg dw) in sediments were in the range of 24.7-121 (43.0) for Cu, 0.06-0.16 (0.09) for Cd, 20.1-68 (28.4) for Pb, 54.4-87.5 (78.2) for Cr, 25-39.9 (32.9) for Ni, 89.3-127 (110) for Zn, 47.3-95.2 (74.5) for Li, 0.016-0.028 (0.022) for Hg, 6.60-9.34 % (8.3%) for Al, 3.18-4.46 % (3.98 %) for Fe. The level of heavy metal concentrations in sediment was in the following order: Al>Fe>Zn>Cr>Li>Cu>Ni>Pb>Cd>Hg.
To determine the status of trace metal pollution, we also conducted an ecological risk assessment. Relatively high concentration of TN (total nitrogen), TOC (total organic carbon), and AVS (acid volatile sulfide) was found in surface sediment located in the narrow channel (site 35-38).
