Increasing use of fossil fuels has caused global warming and environmental pollution. In particular, researches on renewable energy are being actively conducted around the world in order to reduce CO2, which is a major cause of global warming. Despite continuous efforts, municipal waste is still incinerated resulting in CO2 formation. Therefore, waste gasification technology is getting more attention in waste to energy conversion(WtE). The syngas generated through waste gasification has high usability. It can be used directly for gas generators while steam or electric power can be produced through gas boilers. Furthermore, it can be used to manufacture chemical raw materials. For the production of chemical raw materials, synthesis gas can be used as raw material for making methane, methanol, ammonia, etc. depending on H2/CO ratio. Since the methanation reaction of the syngas is a strong exothermic reaction, the catalyst is rapidly thermally aged. Therefore, instead of noble metal catalyst, Ni catalyst was used in this study. The reaction firstly proceeds in a fixed bed reactor. However, in a reaction involving strong reaction of heat such as methanation process where the catalyst is in a fixed state, it may be locally heated by the heat of reaction and thermal aging may proceed expeditiously. On the other hand, for the fluidized bed, the reaction is maintained in the isothermal state because of the solid particles flow. Therefore, this paper focuses on the production of methane using syngas generated from the municipal solid waste gasification. The diameter of the catalyst was controlled for the flow of the solid particles and the minimum fluidization speed was measured. The CO conversion, CH4 selectivity and yield were obtained by varying the flowrate, H2/CO ratio and operating temperatures. The used catalyst was studied using the SEM, EDS and BET analysis. The highest CO conversion was obtained for 350 °C at H2/CO ratio of 3.0 at which the CH4 selectivity and yield were also high. The CO conversion, CH4 selectivity and yield were highest in the fixed bed reaction at 250 °C and H2/CO ratio of 3.0. From the used catalysis analysis, it can be seen that the catalyst used in the fluidized bed reaction confirms the filament carbon deposition and that EDS analysis showed that the amount of carbon in the catalyst used on the fluidized bed reaction was increased compared to the before the reaction.
