In this study, we analyzed the important democratization movement in Korean modern history from the perspective of resistant democratic citizenship. To this end, we classified the resistant democratic citizenship into civil disobedience, direct action, and 'revolution'. Also, the characteristics of each type of democratic citizenship were divided into purpose, violence, actors and methods, attitudes toward the rule of law, and the system where the resistance arises. Based on this analysis, we analyzed the 3‧1 movement, the 4‧19 revolution, the 5‧18 democratization movement, and the June democratic struggle. Considering that the 3·1 movement showed the resistant right of revolution and had a democratic orientation and a rudimentary nature as an independent citizen, we confirmed that the movement can be regarded as a resistant democratic citizenship. The purpose of the 3‧1 movement was to establish the sovereign independence of the nation and democratic state, and the pattern of movement was transformed from nonviolence to violence. By becoming the main agent, the public tried to achieve the goal through various resistant methods such as street demonstration and intentionally ignored the law of the Chosun Governor-General office. At the time of the movement, the regime was extremely authoritarian and oppressive. In that sense, the type of resistant democratic citizenship that appeared in the 3‧1 movement was the 'revolution'. The 4.19 Revolution is characterized by the resistant right of constitutional protection, and it was the manifestation of resistant democratic citizenship in that its orientation was toward democracy and independent citizenship. The purpose of the revolution was to restore demolished democracy, and the form of resistance, in general, was nonviolent. The main agents of the revolution were students and citizens as well as some intellectuals. The method of resistance was popular expression through street demonstrations. The revolutionary subjects pursued the restoration of the rule of law in the situation where it was damaged by the government. The nature of the regime at the time of the revolution was a right-wing dictatorship system by a means of anti-communism. Taking this analysis into account, the type of resistant right of democratic citizenship appeared in 4.19 Revolution can be said to be a direct action rather than a 'revolution'. In case of the 5.18 Democratization Movement, we confirmed that it was the manifestation of the resistant right of democratic citizenship in that it pursued the restoration of the democratic constitutional order by the power of the independent citizens against the forces that destroy the constitution. The purpose of the democratization movement was to restore democratic constitutional order, and although it was violent by the standard of violence, it had the character of resistant violence against the state violence. In terms of subjects, citizens organized the militia to resist the state by centering on the people. Although it may appear that the democratization movement destroyed the rule of law, more accurate point of view is that it actually pursued the restoration of the rule of law. The regime at the time was an extreme dictatorship that violently restricted the basic rights of the people. Taking all of these points into consideration, the 5‧18 democratization movement can be viewed as the direct action. The June democratic struggle was the realization of the resistant democratic citizenship in that it manifests the independent citizenship for the procedural democracy through the constitutional reform. The purpose of the June democratic struggle was procedural democratization through the constitutional reform. The form of resistance was nonviolent on the whole. The subject of resistance was all people, and they mainly used collective demonstration as the method of resistance. While some rejected realistic rule of law, they generally pursued resistance within the rule of law. The ruling system at the time entered a state of appeasement, but in reality it had the character of an illegal dictatorship. Analyzing these elements of resistant democracy citizenship, the June democratic struggle was direct action. As a result of analyzing democratization movement of modern society in social studies textbooks of elementary school from the perspective of the resistant democracy citizenship, we could find the following problems. First, it was difficult to grasp the democratic meaning of each event because it is described in an oversimplified way centering on the event history. Second, the democratization movement of modern and contemporary history lacked the viewpoint that it is the rightful resistance of the people against the violations of human rights such as oppression and dictatorship. Third, since the reactionary aspect of oppression and dictatorship was emphasized, it is not revealed that the event was an active and autonomous manifestation of citizenship. As a result of the study, it can be confirmed that the democratization movement of the modern and contemporary history is the manifestation of resistant democratic citizenship. This fact is expected to suggest many implications in the transition from traditional case history-centered education to democratic education. The modern and contemporary history education in the future should be done in a direction to deepen democracy based on the concept such as resistant democracy citizenship.
