This study examined the relationship among corporate social responsibility(CSR), earnings management and corporate performance for Korean firms. The CSR index is provided by Korea Corporate Governance Center. We measure corporate performance by ROA and ROE, and earning management by discretionary accruals in Dechow(2002)'s model.
The empirical results can be summarized as follows. First, we found that there is a significantly negative relation between CSR activities and earnings management. In other words, the more CSR activities Korean firms do, the less earnings management there is. It implies that ethical managers with active CSR activities show less earnings management behavior.
Second, the current and past earning management behavior are signficantly related to earning management. It means that managers tend to continue earnings management in order to enhance corporate profit. Furthermore, the CSR actitivies in the past year negatively affected corporate performance in the current year. It may be interpreted as meaning that managers do CSR activities to hide earning management behavior.
This study contributes to the current literature as follows. Using the most recent data on CSR activities, we analyzed the diverse aspects or relationships relating to CSR, firm performance and earnings management. We also used a new proxy variable for CSR activities instead of the index of economic justice used in the previous literature.
