In this study, the pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change and the effect of streetscape component’s type and pattern to such recognition was analyzed from the viewpoint of pedestrians. First, the process of pedestrians' recognition of streetscape change was examined, and the questionnaires and analysis methods used in existing literatures were reviewed. Also, according to the physical properties of pedestrians, the visual area of the streetscape was divided into the sky area, the ground area, the front area, and the building area. Four models were used to analyze the effect of elements that affect the recognition of changes in the streetscape. [Study Model 1] analyzed the effect of 'components' on the recognition of streetscape change. According to the results, the change of skyline in the sky area, width of the floor/sidewalk pattern/sidewalk type in the ground area, street trees and street facilities in the front area, and continuity/similarity of the building use in the building area were significantly affecting the pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change. Moreover, each of the streetscape component was found to have a particularly significant effect on the recognition of streetscape change, when the break or repeated continuity of streetscape was observed. Among them, street facilities in the front area was analyzed to be significantly affected by the breaks and continuity, since the effect of street facilities on the recognition of streetscape change depends on the location of main road and minor road. [Research Model 2] analyzed the effect of 'planar elements' on pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change. According to the analysis, the shorter the plane length of the left and right buildings, the wider the width of the major road, the closer the straight distance from the major road to the minor road, the wider the width of the left and right crossing, the closer the distance from the intersection, then the pedestrians were easy to recognize the change of streetscape. [Research Model 3] is a model that verifies the analysis performed above. The significance of each visual area, the effect of each visual area on the recognition of pedestrian’s streetscape change, and the effect of streetscape components on each visual area were analyzed. According to the result of one-way ANOVA, the visual area can be classified into three groups of the front area, the sky and ground area, and the building area. The scheff's method results showed that the front area had the greatest effect on the pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change. Through multiple regression analysis, it was found that the change of visual field in the sky area, the change in the continuity of street trees in the front area, the change in width of street in the ground area, the change of first floor’s usage in the building area have the greatest effect on pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change. In this sense, the influence of streetscape component on the pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change was different among their type of visual area. Finally, [Research Model 4] analyzed the effect of 'three-dimensional elements' on the pedestrian’s recognition of streetscape change. The analysis was based on the physical quantity of the elements. For example, the physical quantity of a building can be obtained by the ratio of the building in the image of a given streetscape. According to the results, when the physical quantities of sky and building increased, the pedestrians are more aware of the change of streetscape. When the physical quantities of street furniture, signs and floors decreased, the pedestrians recognized the change of streetscape also. While the previous researches so far analyzed the streetscape change based on the observer's point of view, this research is meaningful since it analyzed the streetscape change based on the actor’s point of view, the pedestrians. However, this research was conducted under limited pedestrian density, behavior, and weather condition. Future research should consider various elements and conditions to measure the street environment.
