Taepyeongmu is a representative folk dance in Korea; it is a piece that has been recreated based on Gyeonggido Dang-Gut’s Muak(Korean shaman ritual music) and Mumu(Korean shaman ritual dance) by the renowned professor and dancer Han Sung-jun. This study is an analysis that compares the Janggu rhythm of the Taepyeongmu of Han Young-sook and Kang Sun-young, which have been derived from Han Sung-jun’s Taepyeongmu. Prior to analyzing the rhythm difference, the research aims at studying the theoretical background and the relevance between the Gyeonggi-do Dang-gut and Taepyeongmu. The paper also studies the hand-down and the current status of Han Sung-jun’s Taepyeongmu. Han Sungjun’s Taepyeongmu is currently classified as Han Young-sook and Kang Sun-young’s type, and it shows quite difference in terms of rhythm composition, rhythm type and the application of the tune. Through an objective and thorough comparative analysis, the study attempts at unveiling the special features and differences of each type of Taepyeongmu. The results are as follows. Firstly, Han Young-sook’s type is composed of Pusal - Teobeollim - Bongdeungchae and Kang Sun-young’s type is composed of Nakgung rhythm for the entry part. For the progress (development) part, they both shared the similarity of using Teobeollim, Ollimchae and Balppeudeurae rhythm; however, Han Young-sook type uses Gyeopmachigi and Cheondungchae rhythm separately. After the Dosalpulee and Molee rhythm in the conclusion part, Han Young-sook type wraps up with Jajin Gutgeori, while Kang Sun-young uses Teobeollim rhythm. Likewise, the two types differentiated from each other by leveraging significantly different rhythm composision. In addition, the tune composition and arrangement that is either shared the same or used separately showcase the different traits of Taepyeongmu. Secondly, another difference was seen in the drum striking. Concentrating on the analysis of Teobeollim and Balppeodrae rhythm, that is used the same, it has been found that Gyeonggi-do Dang-gut’s “ttra ()” was mainly used in Han Young-sook type, while it was rarely used in Kang Sun-young type. In the meantime, Kang Sun-young uses “Gureugung ()” striking method, while it wasn’t found in Han Young-sook type. Thirdly, after drawing the results of the rhythm status and variation tune through studying the transcription of the drum rhythm of each type, it has been found that there is a difference in the appearance frequency and type. Comparing the Teobeollim that is used similarly in the opening and the Dosalpulee in the conclusion part, it was revealed that Kang Sun-young type had three fold more types of rhythm formations and variation tunes on average. While Han Young-sook uses more various beats, Kang Sun-young had more frequent beats per rhythm and had more various tunes compared to the number of beats it used. Fourthly, there are some similarities and differences in the management of the melody used in the rhythm that is commonly shared. Han Young-sook showcased comparatively plain melody flow centered on Yeolchaenoleum, while Kang Sun-young, which has comparatively more frequent beats, has maximized the climax and relief expression by rushing the speed by mixing the Gungchae and Yeolchaenoleum. Both types had similar traits and features of basic melody. Generally, Han Young-sook type was similar with Gyeonggido Gut’s melody management, whilst the Kang Sun-young type had more vivid and various type. Such management of melody was not unconditional; it rather came from the preference of the players. Tapyeongmmu is a traditional music dance, which was developed based on Gyeonggido Dang-gut melody, which leads to variation in the melody; it should accompany thorough understanding and insight on the melody for the dance. In addition, Taepyeongmu puts more emphasis on melody rather than the tune, which means that there is organic relevance between the dance and Janggu beat. Like how Han Sung-jun emphasized on the harmony of the dance and the beat to his students when he was back in Chosun Music Dance Research Group, the writer hopes that this study makes contribution to the hand-over and development of Han Young-sook and Kang Sun-young’s Taepyeongmu beats, along with the organic education of Taepyeongmu and beats.
