The objective of this study was to investigate whether the influence of a music therapy program, focused on Korean traditional children songs and the improvement of sociability through self-expression, was statistically significant. This was accomplished by comparing the average scores of the spoken content, voice, non-verbal expression, and entirety, which are sub elements of self-expression, and the average scores of cooperation, self-assertion, sympathy, self-regulation, and entirety, which are sub elements of sociability techniques. Also, the degree of impact was examined by differentiating between the sub elements and observing changes by evaluating before and after scores. The scope and subjects of this study were 1st grade elementary school children (aged 7) participating in the voucher activities at the “Growing Tree Center” which is an organization located in Seo-gu, Daejeon City. The Center carries out the voucher project “Children and Adolescent Psychological Support Services” targeting low income class youths. The experimental group was composed of a total of 9 children, with 5 female and 4 male students, and a control group which was composed of 9 children who had similar characteristics with the experimental group of the same center but did not receive any music therapy activity experience. The experiment was carried out from April 5, 2016, to June 28, 2016. Every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 4:40 p.m., the experiment was conducted to investigate whether the influence of the music therapy program, which focused on Korean traditional children songs and the improvement of sociability through self-expression, was statistically significant. This was accomplished by comparing the average scores of the spoken content, voice, non-verbal expression, and entirety, which are sub elements of self-expression, and the average scores of the cooperation, self-assertion, sympathy, self-regulation, and entirety, which are sub elements of sociability techniques. Also, the degree of impact was examined by differentiating between the sub elements and observing changes by evaluating before and after scores. The Wilcoxon signed rank test, which is a nonparametric test, was performed using the SPSS WIN 19.0 Statistic Program to analyze the data. The following conclusions were obtained through discussions of the research results on the effect of collective music therapy on the self-expression and sociability of low income class children. The nonparametric Wilcoxon signed rank test was conducted to evaluate the differences in the scores of the self-expression test. This test was given to investigate the effect of a music therapy program focused on Korean traditional children songs on the self-expression of low income children and the sustainability of the program. These values can be observed by comparing the changes before and after the music therapy program was applied, and it showed that there was a statistically significant difference (Z=-2.429, P<.05) in the self-expression of the experimental group after they underwent the music therapy program focused on Korean traditional children songs. In other words, the scores of the experimental group increased after the music therapy, and 8 out of the 9 group members saw improved self-expression scores. Meanwhile, the control group did not show a statistically significant difference. Thus, it was found that the music therapy program focused on Korean traditional children songs influenced and improved the self-expression of children using the community child center. The nonparametric Wilcoxon signed rank test on the self- expression test score difference was carried out to investigate the effect of the music therapy program focused on Korean traditional children songs on the sociability of low income class children and the sustainability of the program. The rank test is conducted by comparing the differences before and after applying the music therapy program. The results of the test revealed that the sociability technique of the experimental group increased from 3.38 to 3.82, while the sociability technique of the control group slightly decreased. The score for the experimental group saw a statistically significant improvement through a large increment. The decrease in score for the control group was not large nor statistically significant. Therefore, analysis of the average score difference for the experimental and control groups before and after the music therapy showed that the group that participated in the music therapy experienced a statistically significant improvement in sociability techniques. In summary, the collective music therapy program brought about a positive effect and measurably improved the self- expression and sociability of low income class children who participated. Collective music therapy, a form of verbal and conscious expression activity, improved the self-expression of the children by relieving their repressed emotions and enhancing their natural expression and acceptance of their thoughts and feelings. Also, the collective music therapy had a positive impact and improvement in the sociability of the children by helping them acquire the basic functions necessary for interacting with friends and peers. The positive effect of the music therapy program focused on Korean traditional children songs as demonstrated by the results of this study is expected to contribute to the proliferation of encouraging programs in real educational environments, and be applied to programs for the enhancement of self-expression and sociability for low income class children in the area of music education activities, including music therapy.
