ABSTRACT
A Comparative Study of Modern Dancers by Expressionistic Perspectives -focusing on the examples of Germany, United States of America, and Korea
Lee Sang Dept. of Dance The Graduate School Sang-Myung University
In this paper, I investigated the characteristics of expressionist contemporary dance in three countries - Germany, the United States and South Korea – with theoretical backgrounds such as the concept of expressionism, the emergence of expressionism in dance and the concept of full-scale expressionist dance. The main purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the similarities and differences in development within the context of each nation’s expressionist dance.
Expressionism is an artistic movement that expresses the inner feelings of human beings based on the experience of the people centering around Germany during the period around the first and second world war. Expressionism, in particular, helped overcome the contradictions of reality and the inner world by expressing the inner emotions created by the Germans' experiences of war which were confusing and painful socially and historically at the time, thereby it created more diverse and novel movements.
Early expressionist dance was first started by reformist dancers such as Isadora and Duncan in the United States before it started in Germany, but it developed in full-scale under the influence of German dance. Theoretical foundation of German expressionist dance was established by Laban and started with a deep interpretation by Mary Wigman. After that, Hanya Holm actively expanded expressive dance to the US, and through the efforts of Martha Graham and Dennis, expressional contemporary dance in the west was settled. Expressional modern dance also began to take its root in the east by dancer-students studying abroad. Especially in Korea the role of modern dancers was remarkable. Choi Seung-hee, influenced by expressional contemporary dance in Germany and America, pioneered new Korean creative dance by integrating the characteristics of 'Han' people with it. The expressional tendency in modern dance has appeared constantly in every country up until today, and expressional dance can be regarded as a permanent trend in the history of human art.
