Previous studies of Joseon earthenwares have focused on identifying the features and transition of excavated in the production sites. Based on such background, this study aimed to identify the stylistic characteristics of the earthenwares excavated from the early Joseon graves, which were relatively unnoticed in the previous studies, and to establish the chronology of such findings. The definition of earthenware of Joseon period is ambiguous to a certain extent, since some are classifying them as onggi, while others still regard them as clayware, based on the existence of the glazing process. Thus, in this study, we assumed that earthenware is a series of ware that are different in some aspects, such as base soil, glaze, and hardness, based on the consideration of the opinions by previous scholars regarding the concepts of earthenware. Also, we found some examples of the term 'earthenware' from several kinds of literature of Joseon period that they used the term earthenware together with pottery and onggi, and that earthenware was a comprehensive term that embraced the concept of pottery and onggi. Hence, in this study, the term earthenware was used as a comprehensive concept that is different from the concept of porcelain in the Joseon dynasty. In the early Joseon period, some changes were found that anatrical graves appeared, and porcelain epitaph tablets and burial ware buried as tome relics, due to the publication and propagation of various ritual-related literature, such as 『Zhu Xi's Family Ritual (朱子家禮)』 and 『National Five Rituals(國朝五禮儀)』. However, most of the excavated objects that were found in the supposedly early Joseon tombs were daily-life containers, which seemed not much different from those found from the tombs of the Koryo period. Based on such similarity between the objects found in the tombs of two different periods, it was suggested that the actual change of funeral and burial ritual of the early Joseon period was gradual. It was also suggested that after the establishment of the Joseon dynasty, daily-life containers, especially earthenwares, were buried. The findings showed that there was a persisting awareness of funeral and burial rituals for a certain period of time in the early Joseon period. Focused on the tomb sites of the early Joseon period, the excavated earthenwares were classified into regions to determine the excavation process and relevant composition relationships, and the regional characteristics were further researched. Jars, bottles, and barrel-shaped jars were mainly found in the early Joseon tombs, while pottery burial ware, jabaegi, and dongi were excavated in small quantities. It was found that there were regional preferences for certain types of burial wares. It was also determined if there were regional differences in terms of earthenware bottles, and we made a closer investigation of the different characteristics, such as the types and glazing properties of the wares found in each region, as well as when there were regionally distinctive types. Based on the findings from the excavation sites, the stylistic characteristics of the earthenwares found in early Joseon tombs were determined, through the analysis and classification of the containers into jars, bottles, barrel-shaped jars, pottery burial ware's, and other types. As a result, various styles were found depending on ware types, and they were designated by the terms, such as long-trunk jars, short-necked jars, handgrip jars, bangu bottles, palgu bottles, and short-necked bottles. In addition, the wares were classified into the preexisted styles from Koryo period and the newly developed styles in the Joseon period, through the stylistic comparison of excavated articles of Koryo-period historic remains and those of early-Joseon kiln sites. In this study, we tried to build the chronology of the earthenwares from early Joseon period tombs, by dividing the period into three phases, using the accompanying porcelains in the excavation sites as references. Although such classification was mainly referenced on the accompanying porcelains in the early Joseon period, the transition of burial and funeral rituals, as well as stylistic features of the early Joseon era were also considered. Phase Ⅰ refers to the period from the end of the 14th century to the first half of the 15th century. In this period, there was an emphasis on Confucian etiquette practices focused on the royal family, so although they tried to popularize the Confucian-style funeral rituals, Koryo ritual tradition still prevailed in reality. In terms of accompanying porcelains in the excavation sites, the inlaid buncheong wares, which were similar to the late-Koryo inlaid celadon, as well as the flower-stamped buncheong wares, which had a coarse chrysanthemum pattern, were found. Considering that their stylistic features are similar to those found in Koryo remains, it seemed that they still had Koryo tradition to a certain extent in this phase. Phase Ⅱ was the period from the late 15th century to the first half of the 16th century, when the Gwangneung(光陵) Royal Tomb of King Sejo(世祖) was built using the plaster-walled style, and by the time of the King Seongjong(成宗), the ban on the use of the stone room was extended to the general nobility, and the Confucian ritual was gradually spread to make changes. The accompanying porcelains in the late 15th century were buncheong wares made using chnique, underglaze iron painting, and white slip painted decoration, and dunk in the white slip technique, and porcelains with diagonal-like curves on the side that reach the widely open rim. In the early 16th century, the porcelains with diagonal-like curves on the side that reach the widely open rim were mainly found. In Phase Ⅱ, the number of styles of wares was much larger than those found in Phase Ⅰ. Almost all styles of wares, such as long-trunk jars, handgrip jars, bangu bottles, palgu bottles, short-necked bottles, gourd-like bottle, barrel-shaped jars, pottery burial ware's, jabaegi's, dongi's, and steamers were found during this phase. Through the identification of the stylistic characteristics, we distinguished between the traditional types of Koryeo period and those that emerged in the Joseon period, and as for the type of pottery, it gradually deviated from the tradition of Koryo period, and the character of Chosun emerged. Phase Ⅲ refers to the late 16th century, when the neo-Confucianism was deepened, and the Confucian etiquette had a nationwide influence to cause many changes on funeral and burial rituals. Only white porcelains were accompanied in the historic sites of this period. There were some wares that were similar to those found in Phase Ⅱ, but some showed nearly-straight, but curved sidelines right until the outward-curved rim. Styles found in this phase were similar to those found in Phase Ⅱ, so the short-necked jars, handgrip jars, palgu bottles, short-necked bottles, barrel-shaped jars, pottery burial ware's, jabaegi's, dongi's, and steamers were identified. It was also identified that the obviously traditional Koryo styles, such as long-trunk jars or bangu bottles, were not excavated any more in this period. Therefore, it seemed that traditional Koryo styles were not observed any more, but solely Joseon-style containers remained in this phase. This study is an arrangement and analysis of the data representing early Joseon tomb-excavated earthenwares investigated so far. In the study of Joseon ceramics, the absence of an absolute chronology has given difficulties to earthenware research. Thus, this study has an implication that it provided an outline of yet incomplete early-Joseon earthenware chronology, by using the accompanying porcelains as the basic source of chronology.
