The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of positive psychology based song psychotherapy for the former prostitutes to increase self-esteem and to decrease depression. The subjects of this study were 14 women residing in a former prostitute victim shelter located in Seoul. 7 women were randomly assigned to an experiment group and the other 7 women to a control group. Song psychotherapy program was carried out once a week, 60 minutes per session, for a total of 12 sessions from July 20, 2016 to October 26, 2016. To measure the effect of song psychotherapy pre- and post test was performed with Rogenberg’s self-esteem scale and Korean version CES-D. For data analysis, SPSS 20.0 Statistical Program was utilized, and to find out whether there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group, Mann-Whitney U test was carried out. Also, to find out a qualitative change of depression of former prostitutes, sub-factors have been drawn based on the content of letters, and observation records of the researcher as well as the content of interviews carried out on the experience and change of participants. As a result of quantitative research, self-esteem of former prostitutes in the experiment group who participated in the positive psychology based song psychotherapy program increased significantly than that of former prostitutes in the control group who did not participate in the program (p< .05). Also, although depression of former prostitutes did not show a statistically significant difference between the experiment group and the control group, it was confirmed that post test score of the experiment group tended to decrease in comparison to pre test score. And as a result of qualitative research, regarding change of the participants’ experience toward depression, three (3) sub-factors were drawn which include ‘consolation of depressed mind’, ‘behavior change’, and ‘positive interpersonal relationship’.
