In the modern battlefield, stealth technology is critical for increasing the survivability of weapon systems and executing lethal attacks on enemies by confounding various signal detection systems, including those based on radar, infrared, optics, and acoustics. Many countries are therefore investing heavily in stealth technology, but infrared stealth technology remains underdeveloped relative to its potential. Infrared radiation is autonomously generated from all objects that have an absolute temperature above 0 K. It is difficult for aircraft to recognize and avoid infrared-guided weapon threats. Furthermore, owing to the ongoing development of infrared-guided weapons, damage to aircraft has increased and survivability has decreased. Among infrared signals from aircraft, the LWIR 8∼12 μm band, generated by aerodynamic heating and background emissions, is widely used for detection by sensor systems on the latest infrared-guided weapons. However, there has been little research on aircraft stealth technologies to reduce the emission of infrared signals. In the present study, to improve survivability by masking the emission of infrared signals in the LWIR regions, we analyzed stealth performance by adjusting the surface emissivity of the fighter aircraft, taking into consideration the ambient background effect. We also confirmed the potential of low-emissivity paint to control infrared emissions. Convection, conduction, and radiation heat transfer were analyzed using two commercial programs, ANSYS Fluent and Radtherm IR. To improve the accuracy of our numerical model for the F-22 and Su-27 combat aircraft, we applied actual Korean Peninsula meteorological data and flight conditions. To evaluate infrared stealth performance, we calculated average contrast radiance between the combat aircraft and the background, as well as the detection range of infrared-guided weapons. The IR signal difference between the combat aircraft and the background was confirmed through BRDF imaging. We fabricated low-emissivity paint by mixing metal particles with polyurethane paint used on real aircraft, and confirmed that this paint could control emissivity. The infrared signal analysis and aircraft evaluation methods of the present study can be applied to other aircraft and background conditions in future studies. Low-emissivity paint has the potential to be developed for practical use.
