This thesis is an analysis of Franz Peter Schubert’s Variations for Flute and Piano on ‘Trockne Blumen’ from Die schöne Müllerin Op.160. Variations for Flute and Piano uses ‘Trockne Blumen’ from Die schöne Müllerin, Schubert’s first song cycle based on Wilhelm Müller’s poem, as a theme for a set of variations. During Romantic era, composers, who sought for freedom of expression as well as cherishing the subjective and the creative, carried a song cycle to a higher level; a mixed form of literature and music flourished in rich literary materials, and brought piano to new heights of expression. Schubert made significant contributions on song cycles, and he composed over 600 songs during his entire life. Amid his song cycles, he used ‘Trockne Blumen’, the 18th song from Die schöne Müllerin, as the basis for Variations for Flute and Piano. Thus this thesis will illustrate how this melodic theme, ‘Trockne Blumen’ reveals the emotional aspects and the meaning of the poem through various techniques and style of Variation. The variation consists of Introduction, Theme and 7 Variations. Each variations has its own distinct character, and undergoes various transformations. Whereas the theme is sung syllabically in Schubert’s original song, the Variation articulates the theme in a more instrumental way with slurs and staccatos. Each variation is characterised by Figurative and Characteristic Variations. Moreover Schubert handles a rather simple melodic theme in an imitative and contrapuntal manner, where abrupt modulations and transitions of chord progressions are remarkable. Since the original music is written for voice, the composer prevents it from having limits on expression and reformed the theme to adapt the instrumental setting that remains the quality of the original song. In conclusion, Schubert modifies the emotional states in the song instrumentally within the freedom of formality, and shows various aspects of 19th century Romanticism.
