Recently, a great deal of effort has been dedicated to develop a flexible pressure sensor with high performances which is one of the promising candidates for achieving electronic skins related to various applications such as, health monitoring systems, artificial robot arms and wearable devices. The sensitive response for external mechanical stimulation (under 5kPa) is fundamentally required to develop the E-skin which imitates the function of human skin. Over the last few years, capacitive, resistive, piezoelectric and optical type of flexible pressure sensors have been demonstrated as superb candidates for realization of E-skin applications. Above all, the capacitive pressure sensors with micro-structured layer have been investigated due to its high sensitivity and short response time. To achieve the further improvement of the capacitive pressure sensors, morphologies and structures of natural living things are able to be utilized in sensor structure. Here, we inspired the multi-layered porous structure in nature such as mushrooms, diatoms and spongia offilinalis and demonstrated a highly sensitive capacitive pressure sensor based on bioinspired porous structure of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) thin-film. The bioinspired porous dielectric layer in pressure sensors enabled the pressure sensor to feature high performances such as high sensitivity (0.63 kPa-1), fast response and relaxation times, high stability over 10,000 cycles, and extremely low detection limit of 2.42 Pa. Additionally, pressure sensors were demonstrated to fabricated a multipixel array for successful real-time tactile sensing against various touch shapes. The developed flexible pressure sensor may open new opportunities for proceeding advanced human-machine interfaces or various wearable health monitoring devices and robotic sensor system.
