The high quality single crystals of double perovskite R2CoMnO6 (R=rare earth: La to Lu) have been successfully synthesized by the conventional flux method with Bi2O3 flux, and their magnetic functionalities have been investigated. The long-range ferromagnetic order along the c axis originates from the superexchange interaction between Co2+ (high spin, S=3/2) and Mn4+ (S=3/2) ions, and the ferromagnetic transition temperature decreases linearly from 204 K to 48 K, along with the enhancement of monoclinic distortion. Upon annealing crystals in different gas environments, their magnetic properties can be controlled. Furthermore, the variation of the rare earth magnetic ions leads to the various magnetic features such as the onset of magnetic irreversibility, metamagnetic transitions, and reversal of magnetic anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetizations. Particularly, Er2CoMnO6 single crystals exhibit the magnetization reversal in the magnetic susceptibility and the inverted hysteresis loop in the isothermal magnetizations, resulted from the ferrimagnetic interaction between Er3+ and ferromagnetic Co2+/Mn4+ sublattices. In addition, the asymmetric hysteresis shift arises after cooling in a magnetic field. The exchange bias effect in polycrystalline ceramic YFe0.6Mn0.4O3 has been investigated. Materials possessing the exchange bias effect have potentials for magnetic devices such as read heads of recording devices, spin valves, and magnetoresistive random access memories. In this dissertation, we designed a phase mixture of weakly ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states exhibiting a room temperature exchange bias effect in a double perovskite ceramic YFe0.6Mn0.4O3. It shows the room temperature exchange bias fields of -103 Oe, originated from the mixed two magnetic phases between 290 and 380 K. The tunable exchange bias was also found in YFe0.6Mn0.4O3 at low temperature regime, indicating intricate magnetic exchange interactions depending on temperature.
