Seagrasses are an aquatic flowering plant adapted to the marine environment. Seagrasses are important primary producers and provide various ecological services in coastal and estuarine ecosystems. Shoot density, biomass, and leaf productivity of seagrass are affected by water temperature, since water temperature significantly manipulates the metabolism processes. Zostera marina, which is the dominant seagrass species in Korea, is widely distributed throughout all coastal areas in the Korean peninsula. I hypothesized that Z. marina may show different growth patterns along the latitudinal gradient on the southern and eastern coasts of Korea due to the decreasing tendency of water temperature with increasing latitude. The study sites were located at Duksan Port (N37°22', E129°15′) in Samchuk and Bangeojin port (N35°29', E129°25′) in Ulsan on the eastern coast and in Koje Bay (N34°48’, E128°35’) on the southern coast of Korea from April 2015 to October 2016. The optimal water temperature of Z. marina growth was 15-20°C according to the previous studies. Since the upwelling event occurred during summer in Samchuk, water temperature in Samchuk was much lower than that in Ulsan and Koje Bay during the event. Thus, summer water temperature in Samchuk reached near the optimal temperature of Z. marina growth. Although the upwelling event occurred also in Ulsan, mean water temperature in Samchuk was lower than that in Ulsan because the study site in Samchuk was located in the higher latitude region.. Results of this study showed that total biomass and productivity of Z. marina in Samchuk showed higher than that in other sites. Because the upwelling events provide significant amount of nutrients, growth of Z. marina was probably enhanced during the upwelling event. Long-term monitoring of Z. marina growth dynamics was conducted to examine the effects of the disturbances associated with climate change such as water temperature rise. I monitored biomass, shoot density, morphological characteristics, leaf productivity, and environment factors at the Z. marina meadows in Jindong Bay (35° 06’N, 128° 32’’E) from 2002 to 2016 and Kosung Bay (34° 57’N, 128° 19’E) from 2001 to 2016. Water temperature in Kosung Bay was much lower during winter and higher during summer than that in Jindong Bay. Biomass and density increased during spring and decreased during summer and fall in the both sites. Zostera marina meadow in Kosung Bay disappeared from summer 2006 to summer 2007 and during summer 2013 due to high water temperature and red tide. Eelgrass meadows in Jindong Bay also disappeared in summer 2002 due to the red tide algal bloom event. Additionally, eelgrass meadows in Kosung Bay declined dramatically from 2014 due to the harbor expansion construction. Zostera marina appeared to be threatened gradually by the disturbances associated with climate change and caused by human activity in the coastal and estuarine areas of Korea.
