The miniaturization of electronic products has recently integrated more devices in a limited space, and the rapid improvement of their performance has caused far more heat generation and heat density than before, leading to a rapid increase in the malfunction of the devices and the deterioration of the substrates. Such a heat generation issue is a major cause of the shortening of the lifetime of the devices and the deterioration of their functions; hence, the development of materials and design techniques for immediately releasing the generated heat is required. As metal-based materials, mainly used as heat-radiating fillers, are bulky and heavy, there is a growing interest in polymeric and heat-radiating composite materials based on graphite and graphite which have excellent mechanical, chemical and thermal properties. Graphite not only has excellent electrical and thermal properties but exhibits anisotropic properties also. The reason it has anisotropic properties is because it has structural characteristics in which its carbon atoms constitute a strong covalent bond in the horizontal direction, but a weak van der Waals bond in the vertical direction. Recently, studies have been actively conducted to further improve the thermal properties by separating the single-layered graphite from the layer structure of anisotropic graphite to produce graphene or graphite with the limited number of layers. Various methods are available for making graphite into graphene or graphite with the limited number of layers. The mechanical exfoliation process, known as the 'Scotch taping method', is a very simple method to make graphene. This method can easily separate single-layered graphene from graphite, but its low yield makes it unsuitable for mass production. To overcome this disadvantage, Hummers' acidic solvent-based chemical exfoliation methods are widely used. Though when graphene is produced by treating graphite with a chemical exfoliation method, mass production is possible, the C-C bond on the graphite surface is seriously damaged under a strongly acidic aqueous solution condition. As a result, graphite oxide (GO) is produced, in which various polar groups such as hydroxyl group (-OH), carboxyl group (-COOH), and epoxy group (-CHCH2O) are formed on the graphite surface. Severe structural damage of graphite oxide caused by polar groups leads to electrical and thermal degradation. A reduction of the oxidized graphite may partially repair the damaged structures; remove many of the polar groups generated during the acid treatment; and restore electrical and thermal properties. Specifically, there are relatively simple methods of forming graphite (rGO, reduced graphite oxide) by removing various polar groups by heat-processing graphite oxide at high temperature. Among them are the methods of chemically reducing the oxidized graphite under strong alkaline conditions of, for example, N2H4 (hydrazine hydrate), KOH, or NaOH. This study discussed the previous methods of chemically treating and reducing various kinds of graphite, and then modified and supplemented them by a simple method. Sheets under the various conditions were produced with the resulting graphite samples and then their structural characteristics and the horizontal heat conduction characteristics were analyzed. In addition, TIM was prepared with ZnO and graphite at the weight ratio of 80% respectively, and the characteristics of its vertical heat conduction were comparatively analyzed according to the content ratio of graphite and ZnO.
