The aim of this research is to develop a microwave plasma burner for a gasification power plant to produce electricity. Gasification producing synthesis gas (syngas) has been regarded as one of the most promising methods to use coal, ligneous biomass, and organic waste for a clean and renewable energy source. Biomass gasification, however, has an obstacle to be overcome - high tar content production during the gasification process. In general, the tar should be removed through an additional cleaning process before using the syngas for a gas engines, fuel cells, and ammonia or methanol synthesis, since it decreases the efficiencies of syngas applications. Although many researchers have strived to develop post-refining or catalytic reforming of the tar, the zero-tar-gasification has not yet been realized. For this thesis, I have studied an entrained-flow microwave plasma gasifier for a gasification power plant. In chapter I, a motivation and theoretical backgrounds of this study are briefly introduced for the commercial gasification power plant and processes. A gasifier with four microwave plasma burners for gasifying coal, ligneous biomass, and organic waste as gasification feedstocks makes high temperature and a bunch of radicals. Advantages of microwave plasma gasifier are a fast reaction speed, a cheap cost, a safe and easy process due to an atmospheric pressure and a microwave plasma burner comparing with existing commercial gasifiers. In chapter II, an apparatus to generate a plasma flame, more particularly, a microwave plasma burner for a large-volume high-temperature plasma flame is designed by a coal injection into the microwave plasma. The plasma burner was mainly composed of a coal feeder and a stainless steel tube, as the exit for the plasma flame, in series with a 2.45-GHz
microwave plasma torch. The plasma torch using a mixture of Oxygen and air can immediately burn the pulverized coal because of high number of Oxygen radicals and high temperature. In order to examine the possibility to implement the microwave plasma burners for power plants, a feasibility test was conducted using the coal plasma burner with the optical emission lines of the plasma torch, the coal plasma flames, the temperature profile along the axis of the flame, gas compositions at different coal-injection rates etc. In chapter III, an atmospheric-pressure pure steam and air plasma torch was generated by 2.45 GHz microwave energy and was utilized for the investigation of coal gasification. The steam plasma torch generates also highly active species, enhancing the chemical reaction and therefore, eliminating the need for catalysts to enhance the chemical reaction. Fine coal powders, namely pulverized coal, with an average particle size of 70 μm were delivered through a feeder in the experiment. The brown coal from Indonesia with 22.46 wt. % ash and 10.71 wt. % moisture content was injected to a steam torch with microwave power of 4 kW. At a ratio of 1.36 of a coal to steam and 4 kW microwave power the relative concentrations of synthesized gases was 48% of H2, 23% of CO, 25% of CO2, and 4% of CH4 in N2 free basis. The further increase of coal to steam ratio did not much reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), which means that a low-grade coal can be well gasified in a steam and air plasma torch. In this chapter, the 2.45 GHz microwave plasma burner tests the biomass gasification since it can play a pivotal role in producing syngas for power plants and chemical industries. As the injection rate of empty fruit bunch (EFB), which is a waste of a palm tree, is increased, the flame length and temperature of a microwave plasma burner are also increased from 439 mm to 924 mm and 1,236 K to1,531 K, respectively. In the case of EFB gasification, the syngas composition is about 20.8, 35.8, 41.5, 1.9, and 0 % volume for H2,
CO2, CO, CH4, and O2, respectively. The heating value of syngas is 5.44 MJ/Nm3 and the optimum excess O2 ratio for gasification of EFB is about 0.48. Furthermore, a tar is not detected. The requirements of a gas engine and the national air pollution standards are satisfied without the help of an extra purification process (results being NOx: 39 ppm, H2S: 7 ppm, SO2: 10.7 ppm, NH3: 10 ppm, and C6H6: not detected). In chapter IV, a microwave plasma burner was carried out for the scale up to gasification power plant. The result indicates that the gasification power plant using a microwave plasma burner generate the electricity using a 25 kW syngas engine generator. An 1.5 MWth gasifier is designed and applied utilizing coal and biomass feedstocks in an atmospheric 915 MHz microwave plasma burner. Pulverized coal and biomass, which are Shenhua coal, Sawdust sluge, Bark, EFB, Coffee waste, and Fowl droppings, were tested to choose the suitable fuel for gasification by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. The seven feedstocks were injected to four microwave plasma burner systems installed tangentially to the cylindrical gasifier sidewall for gasification. The experimental results show that the requirements from a gas engine are satisfied by employing the entrained-flow microwave plasma gasifier and the electricity was generated with 22% total efficiency using a gas engine generator. Cold Gas Efficiency (CGE) and Carbon Conversion Ratio (CCR) are achieved 78 % and 99.7 %, respectively. I expect that a commercial plasma power plant with an entrained-flow microwave plasma burner system and a better gas engine can achieve an efficiency of about 37.4% even for the economically feasible small renewable energy power plants in rural or sparsely populated areas where the national power grids cannot reach easily.
