Recently, career education has been transformed into experiential education that attracts interest of the students. Moreover, the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) also emphasizes the multifaceted career experience through the links with companies, schools and local communities.
This research examines the effect of career experience satisfaction, beauty career recognition and career maturity of middle school students that attended the Hair Artist Career Experience Training Program (HACETP) for at least once during the semester.
The subjects of this research were 198 students from Yang-O middle school, in Namyangju city, Gyeonggido. 6 classes were conducted for the HACETP.
The results of the research are summarized as follows.
First, the effect of the HACETP on career maturity had no significant difference between men and women. However, on the perception of beauty occupations and career experience satisfaction, female students showed higher perception and satisfaction rates than male students. These results indicate that female students are more interested in beauty than male students and also reflect the conventional stereotype where beauty professions are perceived as a "feminine" job. This is why female students participated in the program more than male students.
Second, it was found that the HACETP had a positive effect on middle school students' perception of hair artists. While hair artist career have been perceived as a difficult profession, the above results show that the career experience enhanced the favorable image of the hair artist career.
Third, it was found out that the HACETP had a positive effect on the career experience satisfaction rates of middle school students. Although the program was a one-time and a short-term program, it was an experience-oriented program that focused on the subjects' participation. Thus, students were able to participate with enthusiasm. Also, they were placed in the career explorer to collect information about jobs and figured out their job aptitude, which helped to decide their career path.
Lastly, it was found that the HACETP had a positive effect on the career maturity of middle school students. However, the analysis of the sub-factors of career maturity showed that there was no pre-post difference on the independence, planning, and attitude toward work, but only in self-understanding. Thus, it was concluded that one-time and short-term program is not enough to have a significant positive effect on the independence, planning, and attitude toward work. However, one-time and short-term programs seem to have a positive impact on one's understanding of what he or she can enjoy and perform well.
These results of HACETP indicate that one-time and short-term programs can attract the interest of middle school students that are placed in the career explorer. Therefore, collecting and understanding information about new jobs through career experiences can have a positive effect on figuring out one's strength and also on the understanding of oneself as well. In the future, participation centered career education must be developed for students to be able to find jobs independently. Moreover, the verification of the effects of such education must be linked with schools, communities and companies in a multifaceted and continuous manner.
