The category(ies) of an item, whether it is an artist, a movie, a book, or a product in the convenience store is assigned or arranged by experts. However, it is not always the case that users see or understand categories as experts do. In this dissertation, the users’ perception of content genre information is investigated for the purpose of predicting the most suitable genre(s) of an item. This task is valuable in fields such as recommender systems and customer psychology. To that end, some probabilistic models -multivariate Bernoulli event model, multinomial event model and categorical event model were applied and compared. Our proposed approach was tested on multiple datasets. First, we predict the genre(s) of movie based on ratings given by users by using the MovieLens-100k and MovieLens-1M datasets. Second, the dataset of music artists in Last.fm was used to test the applicability of our approach for music domain. However, unlike MovieLens that provides genres information, Last.fm makes only the tags given by users available. In order to test the quality of artists’ genre(s) prediction, tags were clustered into different groups, where each group represents a certain music genre. Thereafter, it was made possible to test the proposed approach of predicting an item's genre based on the number of times users listened to a particular artist. Our contribution in the thesis are twofold. First, we present the prediction of movie`s genre(s) based on users' perception. Second, users' tags were used to play the role of output variables in the artist genre classification technique to address the problem related to music datasets that do not provide any artists genre information.
