person-centered counseling is a counseling theory founded by Carl Rogers in 1940. Rogers pursued client-centered counseling and orients for horizontal relationship between a counselor and a client. He established 'process' counseling that client should find the answer rather than counselor should make an order. Additionally, as person-centered counseling was founded by Rogers who was an American, it reflected western individualistic culture. Therefore, it places more importance on individual than group and its ultimate goal is to make an individual functional and to help him to realize himself. However, core concepts and orientation of person-centered counseling make conflicts with our social and cultural aspects. This study classified our social and cultural characteristics as three categories. Firstly, it is vertical and authoritative human relationship owing to effects of Confucian culture which lies in the base of our social and cultural characteristic. Secondly, it is result-centered 'Quickly and Quickly (Ppali Ppali)' culture resulted from rapid industrialization. Lastly, it is lack of communication. Our social and cultural characteristics placing more importance on group than on individual or self and wanting to have a solution quickly make conflicts with person-centered counseling which puts stress on individual and progresses slowly so that client can find a solution for himself. Although there are some conflicts between human centered counseling and Korean social and cultural characteristics, healing process of person-centered counseling is very effective and helpful to Koreans who are hurt by Confucian relationship and conditional accommodation of careerism. These effects are resulted from attitude of counselor and counselor-client relationship of person-centered counseling. This study focuses on these aspects. The purpose of this study is to help person-centered counselors apply person-centered counseling to clients in Korea. The followings are the research problems. First, what do counselors think about Korean Culture? Second, how do they apply person-centered counseling to the field relating with Korean social and cultural characteristics? Third, what are the difficulties of person-centered counseling and what are the future tasks? This study analyzed materials collected from 11 counselors who were using person-centered counseling method through interviews in the way of Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR). The followings are the results. First, Korean social and cultural characteristics were classified as three areas such as 1) Confucian human relationship, 2) Competition and Careerism and 3) Lack of Communication. Second, the application of person-centered counseling was classified as three areas such as 1) Self-reflection of the counselor, 2) Utilization of counseling relationship and 3) Active intervention. Third, difficulties and future tasks of person-centered counseling were classified as 1) High competence of counselors, 2) Supplementation of teaching methods and 3) Expansion of person-centered counseling field. Based on such research results, some issues were presented and some proposals were made for further studies.
