This study aims to compare habitat preferences of macrozoobenthos between two contiguous coastal areas, Geum River estuary and Saemngeum area. During 2014-2015, a total of 353 locations have been surveyed to quantitatively describe distributions of macorozoobenthos and tieir associations with environmental parameters (mud content, organic content and depth). Sediments from Geum river estuary showed higher organic content than Saemangeum, in similar level of mud content. compared to mud content. A total of 12 species were dominant in both areas and selected to compare their habitat preferences. Using box and whisker plot, habitat range of 12 dominant species were shown as noting the environmental value in which 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 95% of total individuals occurred. Habitat preferences of each species were characterized by the criteria of 50% of mud content, 2% of organic content in sediment, and >10 m water depth, where more than 70% of individuals occurred. Mud content and organic content in sediments showed a strong positive correlation in both areas. Sediments in Geum river estuary indicated more organic enriched in the same mud content than those in Saemangeum. Twelve macrozoobenthos species showed a similar habitat range of organic content in sediments between both areas. However, species in Geum river estuary preferred more sandy environment compared to the Saemangeum species. Thus, 8 species of macrozoobenthos were more sensitive to organic contents than mud content in sediments. 12 species in Geum river estuary and 7 species in Saemangeum were sand-favored species. Organic-favored and depth-favored species were similar between both areas. Based on our results, we extends the analysis to the entire Korean coasts with national monitoring data. Notomastus sp. and Aricidea jeffreysii appeared to be sandy-favored species.
