The objective of this research is to study the soldiers’ pre-service smartphone usage and the differences in the urge to use smartphone by military rank as the regulation bans the use of smartphone during the service. Further, the research also aims to understand how the urge to use smartphone is correlated with and affects the level of stress and adaptation during military service. The major research questions are set as below:
Research Questions 1. Is there a difference in the level of urge to use smartphone according to the level of pre-service usage? Research Questions 2. Is there a difference in the level of urge to use smartphone according to military ranks? Research Questions 3. What relationship does the urge to use smartphone have with the stress from military life? Research Questions 4. What relationship does the urge to use smartphone have with the adaptation to military life?
The research conducted a survey interview among 175 soldiers in Jeollabuk-do and used 166 data for analysis. Here, 5 questionnaires were used as research tools asking social demographic information; pre-service smatphone usage; the urge to use smartphone; the level of stress from military life; and adaptation to military life. The data analysis was conducted through SPSS 23.0 program for frequency analysis, reliability test, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.
The main findings of the research is as follows: First, the average levels of urge to use smartphone were 3.22 for the lower dependency group (a) and 3.71 for the higher dependency group (b). The test statistics shows that the t-value is –4.56 while p-value is 0.00, which means that there is a difference as the higher dependency group shows significantly higher rates than the lower dependency group. Second, the result of urge to use smartphone revealed a difference only in one of its sub-factors, the physiological needs. The average of private and private first class (a) was 2.70, 3.12 for corporals (b), and 2.87 for sergeants(c), and the test statistics showed that the F-value is 2.01 and p-value is 0.04. This illustrates that the urge to use smartphone is significantly higher for the corporals than the private and private first class soldiers. Third, there is a positive correlation between the urge to use smartphone and the stress from military life, except for the subfactor of need for pleasure. The need for pleasure has negative correlation to all subfactors of stress from military life. The other three subfactors of the urge to use smartphone, which are need for power, physiological needs, and the need to belong, affect significantly to the level of stress from military life. Fourth, there is a negative correlation between the urge to use smarphone and the adaptation to military life. The significance can be seen from the figures where the coefficient of physical and mental state is –0.23, duty and job satisfaction is –0.22, and the attitude towards organizational environment of the military is –0.25. However, the attitude towards organizational environment of the military among the subfactors of military life adaptation and the subfactors of the urge to use smarphone that affects overall military life adaptation are both significantly influenced by physiological needs.
In sum, among many different stress factors for the soldiers, banning the use of smartphones negatively affects the adaptation to military life. Thus, it is suggested for the military officials to conduct a survey of pre-service smartphone usage as a safe management scheme for the soldiers. The importance of this research lies in that it provides a base study for the counselling services supporting military life adaptation and that it renders a better understanding of emotional and psychological status of the soldiers in relation to smartphone usage and dependency.
