The prevalence rates of periodontal disease are high and the medical expenses have been on the rise in Korea. High Internet penetration rates and its popularity in Korea make consumers search for the health information by using Internet search engine to find out the proper medical treatment. Therefore, this study conducted a survey of websites offering the information on periodontal disease in Korea and assessed the quality of the health information.
The study understood the current status of these websites and was aimed at providing quality health information in order for consumers to choose the proper medical treatment.
In order to assess health information on the Internet, six keywords including “periodontitis”, “gum disease”, “periodontal disease”, “my gums are aching and bleeding”, “my tooth is loose”,
“my teeth hurt” were entered on Korea’s three most popular search engine(Naver, Daum, Zum). The result from the keywords limited the search ads, websites, blogs, cafes(Korea’s online community sites) to 3 pages each and the final 385 websites were evaluated. To compare the quality of Internet health information of Korea and other countries, websites for health information provided by public institutions in Korea, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia were selected. Four keywords(“periodontitis”, “gingivitis”, “gum disease”, “periodontal disease”) were entered to evaluate the sites searched by them. The DISCERN Instrument developed to evaluate the quality of the health information on the Internet consists of 16 items and 5 Point Likert Scale. Three dental hygienists evaluated the websites by making good use of the DISCERN translated by Park Jae Hyun and others.
The result based on Internet health information provided by website administrators showed that the DISCERN Score was 1.9 for the personal websites, 2.0 for the dental clinic websites, 1.6 for the general medical clinic, 1.6 for general and university hospitals, and 1.4 for others in the category of reliability. The DISCERN Score was also 1.5 for the personal websites, 1.6 for the dental clinic websites, 1.3 for the general medical clinic, 1.3 for general and university
hospitals, and 1.4 for others in the category of information quality. The Score was 1.1 for the personal websites, 1.2 for the dental clinic websites, 1.1 for the general medical clinic, 1.2 for general and university hospitals, and 1.1 for others in the category of overall information quality. These scores speak volumes about serious shortcomings as health information. The result on Internet health information provided by public institutions in Korea and other nations revealed that the DISCERN Score was 2.8 for Korea, 3.5 for the United States, 3.1 for United Kingdom, 2.2 for Canada, and 2.9 for Australia in the category of reliability. The
DISCERN Score was also 2.3 for Korea, 2.8 for the United States, 2.5 for United Kingdom, 1.7 for Canada, and 1.8 for Australia in the category of information quality. The Score was 2.6 for Korea, 3.2 for the United States, 2.8 for United Kingdom, 2.0 for Canada, and 2.4 for Australia in the category of overall information quality. The scores showed that Korea did not even partially meet the evaluation criteria.
As a result of the level of agreement among three raters(dental hygienists), the assessment on Internet health information provided by website administrators showed that Fleiss' kappa was 0.17(“poor”). the assessment on Internet health information provided by public institutions in Korea and other nations revealed that Interclass correlation coefficient was 0.64(“good”). The study showed a clear indication of the fact that all the health-related websites can
provide consumers with the quality information so that they could choose the correct medical treatment.
