The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between adolescent risk factors and school adjustment and to verify if emotional intelligence and social support have a mediator effect on school adjustment. To identify correlation between school adjustment and the other factors, the researcher sets five following questions: 1) How do risk factors, school adjustment, emotional intelligence, and social support affect one another? 2) How do the emotional intelligence and social support act on the relationship between risk factors and school adjustment? To verify the aim and the above questions, self-report questionnaire method is used in this study. For this study, six-hundred students were picked among high school freshmen and sophomores in Y-City, Gyeonggi Province. Except for a few insincere commitments, 530 results were collected and they analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. The measurement tool includes adolescent risk factor scale, school adjustment scale, emotional intelligence scale, and social support scale. The following results from analysis shows how the factors affect one another: 1) The lower risk factors are, the higher emotional intelligence, school adjustment, and social supports are. Among the sub factors of risk factors, only individual factors and peer group factors, not family factors nor local factors, have effect on school adjustment. All the sub factors of emotional intelligence and social support have influence on school adjustment and it means there is a proportional relationship among emotional intelligence, social support and school adjustment. 2) Emotional intelligence and social support are perfect mediator for each other in the relationship between risk factors and school adjustment. In the other words, emotional intelligence and social support offset the negative effect of risk factors on one’s school adjustment. And this study is also used a moderated mediation effect to examine if the effect of emotional intelligence on the relationship between risk factors and school adjustment has some differences on the degree of social support. In this case, emotional intelligence has mediation effect on the high social support group. On the other hand, emotional intelligence has no mediation effect on the low social support group. The survey result shows the higher adolescent recognizes his or her emotional intelligence and social support, the better he or she can adjust school. Also, even if risk factors are high, adolescents can adjust school well through the mediator effect between emotional intelligence and social support. Consequently, biggest risk factors which can affect adolescents’ school adjustment are individual factors and peer group factors. Also, there are two different kinds of protection factors which function as a positive variable of school adjustment- one is emotional intelligence as an individual internal protection factor and another is social support as an individual external protection factor. As a result, this study emphasizes the importance of following statement: To improve adolescents’ school adjustment, each of school counseling office needs to develop and conduct programs enhancing an individual emotional intelligence and also to try to invent a method to secure and widen social support net.
