This study aims to investigate the purchase pattern and the usage profile of facial masks per their effectiveness, and professional aestheticians working for aesthetic salons and medical skin care clinics are the subject of the experiment. The experiment was conducted from the 20th of February, 2017, until the 10th of April, 2017, in Daejeon, Chungcheong, Seoul, Yeongnam and Honam provinces. 409 copies of survey in both paper and electronic forms were distribute and collected, and 89 copies were excluded due to insincerity and inaccuracy. In total, 320 copies of the survey were used as the basis for the final analysis. The results of the experiment reveal that the age and the years of service of professional aestheticians are higher for those who work in aesthetic salons than those in medical skin care clinics. The number of managing customers is lower for the aestheticians at aesthetic salons than those in medical skin care clinics. The effects of facial masks for normal skin type include brightening of skin tone and moisturizing. For troubled skin, facial masks relieve sensitive skin, and in medical skin care services, they not only relieve sensitive skin but also improve skin elasticity during facial contouring. The reason for the selection of facial masks typically used differs for the two groups of aestheticians. Those in aesthetic salons select their facial masks based on the safety of the use on customers’ skin, and those in medical skin care clinics base their decision on the ease of use. The reason for the purchase of different types of facial masks also differs, as those in aesthetic salons purchase for the different effects of the facial masks, whereas those in medical aesthetics purchase for the ease of use. This can be explained by the typical age group of the aestheticians. Professionals at medical aesthetics are mostly in their 20’s to 30’s, and the years of service is lower. Their competence level, therefore, is also lower than those in aesthetic salons, yet they manage more customers, hence their natural preference of the usage of facial masks lies on the convenience of the use. The significance of this research is that its subject is professional aestheticians, whereas previous studies were focused mainly on the consumers. It also compares and analyzes the usage of facial masks used in both medical skin care clinics and aesthetic salons, thereby laying an important and useful foundation on the marketing strategy for the relevant industries. On the other hand, the limitation of this study is that the method of removal of facial masks is the only means of subject classification. In future studies, different forms of classification such as the effects, materials and components of facial masks must be used to continue and foster academic studies and efforts in this field of research.
