Along with the growing demand of modern people for well-being, eco-friendly and healthy living environment, there has been an continuing upward trend for light wooden structures since its introduction in the 1990s in Korea. In addition, there is a growing interest in energy consumption in the building sector in order to prevent global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and various studies are under way to reduce energy in lightweight structure buildings. However, even though many types of new construction systems have been introduced last 30 years, various defects such as degradation of insulation performance, moisture inflow into a wall, damage of building components, increase of insulation load, condensation and fungal generation can be frequently found in buildings. This is because the development of light wooden envelopes has been conducted only in terms of thermal performance without considering the effects of climatic characteristics of Korea and physically hygric properties of building materials. Therefore, in this study, hygrothermal performance of envelope of light wooden structure were analyzed with improvement of thermal performance, SD value change, and composition variation of envelope by analyzing the representative light wooden structures in Korea. Furthermore, through the heat transfer analysis of ISO 10211 and blower door tests on actual building sites for the airtightness, it was evaluated for the passive house level of the light wooden structure that can be successfully adapted to the Korean environment. As a result, the low-energy light wooden structure showed about 0.78 h-1 of the airtight performance under the pressure of 50 Pa and the thermal transmittance of high-performance windows was 0.94 ~ 1.27 W/m2K. Based on the outdoor climate of Seoul, the annual energy requirement of heating energy was analyzed as 23 kWh/m2a. According to the hygrothermal analysis, the possibility of dew condensation and fungus formation were analyzed to be highly dependent on the amount of precipitation accompanied with the wind, so-called driving rain, in summer and the moisture introduced into the structure due to the difference of water vapor partial pressure in winter. In order to prevent these problems, it is confirmed that a vapour barrier layer should be installed on the indoor side of the structure and weather resistive layer and a ventilation layer must be installed on the outdoor side to ensure structural stability and prevent defects due to mould growth and condensation. In addition, to enhance the stability of structure against summer condensation and fungal growth that can result from air conditioning in buildings, it is recommended to build a pore variable vapour barrier with relative humidity on the inner part of envelopes. In this paper, hygrothermal performance of envelope of light wooden structures were analyzed based on indoor and outdoor climate data in Korea. Moisture and mould growth behavior were analyzed as the change of materials and wall configuration. It is expected that the development and improvement of envelope of light wooden structure suitable for climate of Korea will be accomplished through the contents of this study.
