As a means of communication and an instrument of desire satisfaction, fashion carries multidimensional messages, and different concepts are sometimes embedded in a single idea. Medieval women’s costumes such as bliauts, corsages, and cotehardies have two complicated and conflicting images embedded in them—namely, the image of the virtuous woman who is in concealment as enforced by religion, and the image of the woman of desire who is true to her instincts. The ideas of Asceticism and Captivatism embedded in medieval costumes express dignified virtuosity and sensual eroticism, symbolizing women’s authority and dignity. Azzedine Alaïa, a contemporary fashion designer, reinterprets the ideas of Asceticism and Captivatism in his own language, bringing in the aesthetic value of inevitable duality into his collection. The characteristic that medieval women’s costumes and Alaïa’s garments share is the coexistence of Asceticism for continence and Captivatism for exaggeration in a single clothing item, which is a methodical means of satisfying both ideals regarding the appearance and inner desires of women. The present study consists of an analysis of Alaïa’s designs that are based on the dual aesthetic criteria of Asceticism and Captivatism as the characteristics of medieval women’s costumes; the study also includes an analysis of the features of medieval women’s costumes and Alaïa’s work to be incorporated in development of new fashion designs. The aim of this research is to develop a fashion collection line that is inspired by Asceticism and Captivatism. The research questions designed to achieve the research objective are as follows. First, how are the concepts of Asceticism and Captivatism defined, and what are their aesthetic properties? Second, what are the features and aesthetic properties of medieval women’s costumes? Third, what are the formative aesthetic features of Azzedine Alaïa’s design? Fourth, what are aesthetic properties of Asceticism and Captivatism that are found in both medieval women’s costumes and Alaïa’s work? Fifth, what are the features of Asceticism and Captivatism that were identified for the purpose of developing a fashion collection line, and how the fashion design elements identified according to the approach can be incorporated in new designs? To address the research questions, a theoretical framework was developed based on the existing literature about Asceticism and Captivatism, previous research about the symbolism of the body and the aesthetic value of costumes as manifested in medieval costumes, and historical accounts of Western costumes. The data gathered included 234 photographs related to medieval costumes, 19 records of Alaïa’s work including exhibition catalogs and collection videos, and 643 photographs of his work; after gathering this data, 96 items that demonstrate the features of Asceticism and Captivatism were selected for analysis. Based on the selected data, the relationship between the aesthetic values of Alaïa’s work and medieval women’s costumes was examined, and based on the results of the examination, eight pieces of women’s garments were developed. Basic data analysis was performed with Alaïa’s prêt-à-porter and haute couture collections; only the haute couture collections were used as inspiration for the development of the fashion collection line. The aesthetic features identified for the collection line through the analysis of Alaïa’s designs were ‘dignified continence,’ ‘formative construction,’ and ‘elegant sensuality’; the aesthetic properties shared by Alaïa’s work and medieval women’s costumes were ‘Asceticism and Captivatism,’ ‘understatement and overstatement,’ and ‘respect for the female body.’ The aesthetic features of Asceticism and Captivatism manifested in Alaïa’s work were ‘normative elegance,’ ‘understated sensuality,’ ‘sublime femininity,’ and ‘solid construction.’ The study results show that, in medieval women’s costumes, dual images of the woman of forced religious virtue and the woman who is true to her desires coexist as a result of the following features: unexpected eroticism conveyed through tightness, feminine and elegant beauty created by the drape technique, and a sensual silhouette generated by the structural form that cutting and sewing techniques made possible. It was also found that, in the work of Alaïa, ascetics and captivating features coexist as a result of sensuality in a body-conscious tight silhouette as an appreciation of the female body, the use of solid colors as a medium of true nature, and the creation of a formative feature that is shaped by combining different types of materials. The analysis results show that the common aesthetic properties of medieval women’s costumes and Alaïa’s work are ‘continence,’ ‘constructure,’ ‘sensuality,’ and ‘femininity.’ This study developed a collection line called 『Coexistence: Aesthetics of Difference』 by combining the identified aesthetic properties with the researcher’s design identity, 『Human Duality: Asceticism and Captivatism』. The work was developed by expressing the dual characteristics of human beings—that is, innocence and desire—using core aesthetic values that are evident in both medieval women’s costumes and Alaïa’s work—continence, constructure, sensuality, and femininity. The collection line aims at fulfilling ideals in appearance and inner desires by weaving conflicting ideas of Asceticism and Captivatism in human nature with the beauty of the female body. The work was developed using simple, restrained design elements. In terms of a color scheme, 『Deep Black』—which symbolizes concealment and stoicism—『True White』—which reveals the duality of innocence and desire —and 『Burning Red』—which expresses the passion of instinctive desire —were chosen as the main colors to maximize the contrast between the opposite images of Asceticism and Captivatism. 『Daybreak Gray』, 『Lai Red』, 『Brightness Yellow』, 『Empty White』, and 『Melt Ivory』 were used as sub-colors to indicate the contact point between Asceticism and Captivatism. To establish the boundary between concealment and revealingness based on different types of elements, materials with heavy physical properties such as velvet, wool, leather, tongue, and calf skin and materials with light physical properties such as tulle, net, and organza were used together. Based on these, the theme of the collection was decided as 『Coexistence: Aesthetics of Difference』 and eight pieces of women’s garments were created as a result, which were titled 『Darkness』, 『Light』, 『Passion』, 『Pureness』, 『Silence』, 『Secret』, 『Waiting』, and 『Desire』, respectively. The present study discusses Asceticism, focusing on stoic features that conceal the beauty of the human body while addressing Captivatism in terms of sensuality and physical eroticism. The suppressive restraining features that are inherent in Asceticism aim at the state of sublimation toward ideals, and are realized through the life of concealment and restraint. However, Captivatism realizes eroticism by maximizing the sensual beauty of the human body. Thus, the findings of this study indicate the essence of Asceticism and Captivatism as the concepts that are used for attaining dualistic goals. Specifically, in this research, Asceticism is defined as “the philosophy of understatement(concealment) used to express ideologies and attain ideals by suppressing mental and physical desires,” and the human desire to realize ultimate ideals through practices in living, and Captivatism is defined as “the philosophy of overstatement(revealingness) used to realize desires by mentally and physically maximizing sensual beauty,” and as the behavior that fulfills instinctive desires by stimulating eroticism of mind and body.
