This thesis describes fabrication and characterization of supercapacitor electrodes based on various nanostructured transition metal oxides (TMOs). The supercapacitor, a capacitor with extraordinarily high specific capacitance basically consists of current collector, electrolyte and active electrode materials. The TMOs as an electrode material for supercapacitors and of interest owing to their chemically, physically and electronically unique properties. The nanostructuring the electrodes is also of importance because the increased surface area and consequently more effective ion transport between the electrolyte and electrodes is crucial for enhancement in their capacitive properties. In Part I, the manganese oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and used as an electrode for supercapacitor. The Mn3O4 NPs were successfully deposited on the current collector substrate by simple ligand-exchange treatment despite the absence of any polymeric binders. As compared to the electrode fabricated using binder-mixed Mn3O4 NPs, this ligand-exchange-treated electrode shows significantly improved specific capacitance and rate capability. In Part II, the well-ordered manganese oxide (MnO2) nanopattern was fabricated by electrochemical deposition of MnO2 on two-dimensionally arrayed polystyrene nanospheres. This nanostructured electrode can provide large surface area and short diffusion length for ions and electrons, and hence improve the capacitive properties of the supercapacitors. As a result, it was confirmed the electrochemical properties were improved as compared with planar MnO2 electrode. Finally, in Part III, ruthenium oxide (RuO2) nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto the indium tin oxide (ITO) nanorods. This coaxial nanostructured current collector (ITO) – electrode (RuO2) system can provide significantly increased contact for efficient charge transport and easy access for electrolyte ions. Overall, for the application of TMO electrodes to supercapacitor electrodes, various nanostructures were fabricated and characterized. The electrochemical results presented in this thesis demonstrate the benefits of the nanostructures.
