Although over 60% of reservoirs in South Korea were built over 50 years ago, they are not being repaired or reinforced and, therefore, are susceptible to disaster. Also, localized heavy rains and large-scale typhoons will aggravate damage caused to overflowing of dams. Current spillways of agricultural reservoirs were designed based on PMP or 200-year recurrence interval. However, the design did not take into account climate change and it is necessary to conduct hydrologic safety evaluation according to the effects of climate change on the facilities. This study selected eight agricultural reservoirs (Gosam, Gwangju, Geumgang, Giheung, Dongbu, Miho, Idong, Cheongcheon) and compared the PMP that was previously proposed and that according to the climate change scenario proposed by CCAW , in order to conduct hydrologic safety evaluation for each reservoir by using flood discharge model and reservoir tracking model. The rainfall analysis showed that, when taking into account climate change, the estimated amount of rainfall increased by 17.7 ~ 25.7% (17.7% in Gosam; 20.1% in Gwangju; 25.7% in Geumgwang; 22.8% in Dongbu; 22.4% in Miho; 23.9% in Cheongcheon), compared to the previously proposed PMP. According to the hydrologic safety evaluation, when the PMP taking into account the effects of climate change was applied, the highest high-water level of the Cheongcheon reservoir exceeded the established elevation, and those of the rest of the reservoirs were above flood elevation or below the established elevation. This study quantitatively analyzed hydrologic safety related to climate change and aging dam facilities and provided quantitative and objective data for WH evaluation for dam redevelopment in the future.
