The water purification process at water purification plants that supply clean and safe drinking water to citizens is changing from the standard water treatment process to the advanced water treatment process. The direct and indirect reason of process change might be the characteristics of domestic water resources using surface water as the source, the rapid increase of algae due to abnormal climate, the increase of the frequency of high concentration of substances that cause taste and odor, and small amount of inflow of polluted substance. In many cases, however, advanced water purification treatment facilities were installed in existing facilities, which caused limitations like shortage of site area. Accordingly, the pre-ozonation + F/A (Filter/Absorber) process with improved filter paper was introduced, and the case of D water purification plant constructed in 2015 is an example. However, as the variability of quality of source water is increased and process stability is lowered, the need for year-round operation of pre-ozonation facility that has been operated intermittently is emerging. Therefore, in order to grasp the effect of the pre-ozonation + F/A (Filter/Absorber) process on water quality, the research was conducted to remove and reduce the natural organic materials (NOM) and disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the actual process of D water purification treatment plant. Analysis of the characteristics of the raw water of D water purification plant at Han River water system showed that the effect of precipitation was significant on water quality because the river water was used as a water source. Humic Substances(HS), known as the precursor of disinfection by-product, showed the highest composition ratio of 27-36% with the range of 0.35-0.82 mg/L in LC-OCD analysis. As SUVA value was 2.39 ± 0.35 L/mg.m in 2015 and 2.49 ± 0.32 L/mg.m in 2016, the organic matter of raw water was characterized by including hydrophilic, non-aromatic and low-molecular substances. Regardless of concentration of organic substances in raw water, the removal of organic substances according to the amount of ozone infusion was not significant in the LC-OCD, but ozone treatment caused conversion of the double or triple bond in the molecule of HS into a single bond, lowering the UV absorbance showing a big difference in the LC-OCD trend. As for removal rate, removal rate according to ozone infusion or not was varied depending on component, but removal rate of HS was 8.2% in case of ozone infusion higher than in case of no ozone infusion. The higher the ozone injection rate, the better the CDOC removal rate by 12% in coagulation sedimentation process and F/A filtration process. On the contrary, in F/A process, the LC-OCD peak showed a slight difference, while the LC-UVD trend showed little difference. In the F/A process of HS-diagram, the number average molecular weight remained almost unchanged, while the SUVA-HS value increased. This suggests that there is a possibility that the HS is partially removed or converted to a low-molecular substance, but has little effect on the molecular bond. As for the disinfection by-products, the reduction ratio of 4 items (THMs, HAAs, CF, CH) compared to the standard water purification treatment process was 11.8 to 100.0 % according to the pre-ozone injection in the advanced water purification treatment process. In conclusion, pre-ozone injection in the combination of pre-ozone and GAC F/A process has a positive effect on the removal of NOM and helps improve the removal rate of disinfection by-products. Year-round operation is necessary in the future in terms of the control of organic matter and disinfection by-products along with the control of taste and odor.
