Korean Business Professionals’ Perceptions on Spoken English Proficiency and Intercultural Communicative Competence in Foreign Language Learning Contexts
Intercultural communicative competence (ICC) has been increasingly considered as a necessary component to develop along with foreign language competence with the respect to frequent interactions with multilingual- multicultural individuals. (Committee for Economic Development, 2006; Hismanoglu, 2011). However, intercultural competence has been often regarded as the separated component from language competence in most of today’s studies due to lack of awareness of ICC as well as its inconsistent ways of assessments (Fantini, 2006, 2015; Hismanoglu, 2011). Especially, the paucity of the relevant studies in EFL contexts have still showed the varying results in the relationship between the development of spoken English proficiency and ICC. Therefore, this study aimed for examining current level of 120 Korean business professionals’ perceptions on spoken English proficiency and ICC as well as its relationship as mixed methods. The statistical data were collected in the first two weeks by two instruments adapted from Butler’s (2004) FLOSEM for assessing spoken English proficiency (oral fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar) and Fantini’s (2006) AIC for ICC (Knowledge, attitudes, skills and awareness). For additional two weeks, the interview was further investigated with six participants selected in convenience to view further insights on the significance of spoken English proficiency and ICC required in ELF or ESP contexts. For the findings of the survey, it proved that Korean business professionals perceived their overall spoken English proficiency and ICC in the level between intermediate and high intermediate. In terms of four components of spoken English proficiency, Korean business professionals evaluated oral fluency as the most highly developed spoken English skills whereas pronunciation the least. Most interestingly, it was noteworthy that they rated themselves low on phonological and grammatical skills despite of the large amount of time that typical Korean EFL learners spent on developing receptive skills and grammatical knowledge. For self-rated four components of ICC, the majority of Korean business professionals perceived that the attitudes were the most highly developed followed by intercultural awareness. However, the intercultural knowledge was perceived to be the least developed in specific fields of behavioral, strategic and factual knowledge. For the intercultural skills, the skills of discovering new knowledge of different cultures through particular strategies were perceived to be underdeveloped as well. In terms of correlation analysis, based on Pearson Product Moment Correlation, this study provided the evidence that there was a strong correlation between overall self-rated spoken English proficiency and ICC as well as each four components. Furthermore, the findings in the interview revealed that Korean business professionals’ perceptions on the low level of their overall spoken English proficiency were rigidly linked to the ascendancy of Americanized norms of English (Firth & Wagner, 1997). This was due to the limited opportunities to improve spoken English skills in EFL contexts as well as the high tendency of developing the receptive skills through multi-media or reading materials (Jenkins, 2006). In addition, the interviewees’ ICC was proved to be underdeveloped based on their ambiguous expressions on defining ICC and the ways of evaluating their level of ICC in reliable ways. For the perception on correlation, the participants showed the contradictory result to the statistical analysis that the development of spoken English proficiency and ICC should not be always correlated to each other in parallel in domains of business professionals. Developing English skills for utilizing direct and accurate vocabulary were valued more than intercultural skills in business contexts. As a progress of preventing from stereotypical beliefs on “nativism,” FLT should enhance not only the development of linguistic competence but also intercultural competence by designing curriculum or teaching materials reflecting to multicultural perspectives of language use (Canagarajah, 2007; Firth & Wagner, 1997). In addition, the possibility of measuring individuals’ spoken English proficiency and ICC through the consistent and interpretable tool in simultaneous manner guides language educators, researchers or even business professionals to develop the new requirements for FLT preparing for interculturality and globalization.
