The social phenomena of Korea’s society today have induced both parents in the family to work, in addition to women developing desire to achieve higher status. Due to the phenomena where women strive to claim their rights, many have become more interested in their personal lives, as opposed to being a mom or a wife. Consequently, childcare uses have been increasing with younger infants being sent to these facilities. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of social and emotional behavior on infants’ childcare adaptation caused by above factors. The research questions for the current study are as follows:
1) Is there a difference in social and emotional behaviors according to infants’ general background (e.g. gender, birth order, age, period they spent at the childcare)? 2) Is there a difference in childcare adaptation according to infants’ general background (e.g. gender, birth order, age, period they spent at the childcare)? 3) Is there a correlation between infants’ social and emotional behaviors and their childcare adaptation? 4) What are the effects of infants’ social and emotional behaviors on their childcare adaptation?
The participants of the study were 204 infants residing in 3 districts in Seoul (Gwanak, Dongjak, Seocho), as well as 50 childcare teachers. The experiment adopted survey methodology. To measure infants’ social and emotional behaviors, the current study utilized Brigg-Gowan and Carter’s (2001) Infant Toddler Socio-Emotional Assessment: ITSEA. An abridged version, Brief Infant Toddler Social-Emotional Assessment: BITSEA was later made by Carter, Briggs-Gowan, Jones, and Little (2003), consisting of questions that have achieved significant reliability and validity. This was further modified by Kim (2009), which was also used by the current study. To measure infants’ childcare adaptation, The Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire: PAQ by Jewsuwan, Luster, Kostelnik (1993) was chosen. Similarly, Oh (2001) modified the questionnaires, which was further altered by Kim (2015). Thus, the current study also adopted the modified version by Kim (2015). The data analysis included descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation, and simple linear regression analysis. The results are as follows:
First, aside from birth order, all other general background factors (gender, age, period they spent at the childcare) indicated a significant difference in their social and emotional behaviors. Second, only age factor showed a significant difference in childcare adaptation among other general background factors. Thus, other factors (e.g. gender, birth order, and period they spent at the childcare) were not significant. Third, there was a statistically positive correlation between infants’ social and emotional behaviors and childcare adaptation. Fourth, the effect of social and emotional behaviors on childcare adaption was statistically significant.
As the use of childcare facilities is increasing in Korea among younger infants, the current study is significant in that it provided basic groundwork to infants’ adaptation in childcare facilities.
