Seok-Jae Seo Byeong-Oh(石齋 徐丙五, 1862~1936) stands unchallenged among calligraphers who accepted traditional and new style of painting and pioneered unique literary painting world from the Late Period of Joseon to the Japanese colonial era. Seok-Jae brushed up on his study and calligraphy since he was young and he had an interest in literary painting especially. He built a foundation by himself through artbook published in China and after he made his own style of literary painting while getting influenced by many teachers. In his boyhood, knowledge of poem · writing · painting through the guidance from Seok-Pa Lee Ha-Eng(石坡 李昰應, 1820~1898) and theory of literary painting and study from Chu-Sa Kim Jeong-Hee(秋史 金正喜, 1786~1856) had a great influence on his value of literary painting. The theory of literary painting formed like this put emphasis on having poem · writing · painting all together and theory of raising learning (學養論) achieved from academic and moral training, theory with writing calligraphy (運筆論) trying to use calligraphic strokes of the brush into drawing technique, theory of Seon-Phil of sudden enlightenment (頓悟的 禪筆論) having a command of stroke of unconventional stage and painting theory of writing own thought (寫意論的 繪畵論) trying to express his mind became the creating foundation. He went to China and Japan to study abroad for deeply study paintings and calligraphic works that can show the value of literary paintings formed on academic foundation of Confucianism · Buddhism · Taoism into work and especially, an influence of a Chinese painting style was big. The period of studying abroad in China was primary (1898~1902) 4 years and secondary (1908~1909) 1year and he got influenced by painting style of Shanghai. At that time, Shanghai became international commercial city and the influx of foreign capital increased because harbor was opened by the Opium war and therefore painting style of respecting individuality and refusing traditional painting style. In Shanghai, Seok-Jae stayed in Cheon-Shim-Juk-Jae of Un-Mi Min Yeong-Ik(芸楣 閔泳翊, 1860~1914) and had a companionship with Oh Chang-Seok(吳昌碩, 1844~1927) · Je Baek-Seok(齊白石, 1860~1957) · Po-hwa(浦華, 1830~1911) · Yang Bo-Gwang(楊葆光, 1830~1912) who were a master in those days. He accepted new painting style of Shanghai reflecting the phases of the times and made it his own style. Seok-Jae inherited ‘Un-Mi-Ran’ of Min Yeong-Ik and made ‘Seok-Jae-Ran’, draw ‘Seok-Jae-Juk (石齋竹)’ on the basis of Muk-Juk of Jeong-Seob(鄭燮, 1693~1765) and Po-Hwa, and he made colorful painting style influenced by kind of flowers, trees and stones of Oh-Chang-Seok and he completed his painting style which has a plenty of calligraphic meaning and Pictoriality taking studying abroad in China as opportunity. Literary paintings of Seok-Jae are mainly ink-and-wash painting style and it made unique art world having symbolism of noble man and elegance of writer or meaning of good luck. Various experience and knowledge he got from studying abroad in China became a foundation in his creating activity and showed as masculine style of literary paintings that beauty of strong Yang-Gang(陽剛) stands out. And these new style of literary paintings was inherited to future scholars. Therefore, in this report, I tried to determine creativity and diversity of literary painting style of Seok-Jae considering its characteristic dividing his world of literary paintings into Four Gracious Plants · Flowers · Ink landscape paintings · Paintings of tableware and branches · Paintings of an oddly shaped stone · Paintings of an old pine tree · Paintings of crab. Especially, the most centered flower branches of noble man among paintings were pine, cinnamon tree, loquat, lotus including four gracious plants which writers loved and tablewares were container which containing four gracious plants and flowers mostly. Therefore, in paintings of tableware and branches, he reflected his consciousness as writer of brush and indian ink and expressed his meaning of drawing independently borrowing materials close to daily life of writer. He interacted with major calligraphers all over the country with new style of literary paintings and showed his aspect as painting and writing teacher at the same time. In 1922, He worked hard to teach poem · writing · painting founding 'Kyonam-siseohwa research group' which is modern educational institutes of paintings and calligraphy, and he actively participate in interzonal exchange of paintings and calligraphy and circulation of work of art founding exhibition of paintings and calligraphy , writing and proclaming competition which were innovative at that time. And he played pivotal role in the world of paintings and calligraphy and Korean paintings in Daegu. Especially, His painting style of paintings and calligraphy had a great influence on modern world of paintings and calligraphy, and style of ink-and-wash painting centered on paintings of the Four Gracious Plants led to Seo Dong-Gwun(徐東均, 1902~1978) who represents second generation of the world of paintings and calligraphy in Daegu and developed into the style of literary paintings which pictoriality were added. And after, it led to Park Geun-Sul(朴根述, 1937~1993) and revived into individual literary paintings which differ material based on tradition. Therefore, Paintings and calligraphy of Seok-Jae not only succeeded traditional style of paintings and calligraphy and also he played a role as opening a prospect of modern paintings and calligraphy surpassing the field of paintings of the Four Gracious Plants and flowers and trees and stone and raise the field of modern paintings and calligraphy to the value of paintings.
