After World War Ⅰ, the era of modernism began, and there were radical changes among many aspects of the society in the 1920s. Fashion, of course had changed a lot, especially in women's clothing. That change was the most significant change in the history of fashion. The new and innovative 'modern' style had emerged as the cutting edge of fashion. On the other hand, the elegant and feminine 'romantic' style was noted as the alternative fashion to modern style. In the 1920s, many women were able to love the romantic style fashion because it was not only keeping the pre-existing romantic style but also partially accepting the comtemporary fashion trends. 1920s romantic style was different from the anti-fashion that disregards trends and brings elements which were denied in fashion of the era. Thus, romantic style in the 1920s fashion was an alternative style to progressive modern style, and also, another relevant style of the decade. Despite that, in the field of fashion history research, there has been almost no discussion about 1920s romantic style, and it has been treated as a non-mainstream fashion style as compare to 1920s modern style. This thesis was regarding romantic style and modern style of the 1920s fashion as two distinct individual style that has its own traits and characteristics, and approached them on equal horizon. The aim of this thesis was to understand the distinctive identity of 1920s romantic style and modern style as well as their relation, by analyzing external form and intrinsic value. Furthermore, this thesis also aimed to make an organic interpretation of both style, away from the fragmentary interpretation through comparison with synchronic point of view. This thesis discussed the general notion of romantic style and modern style, historical background of the 1920s, and the representative fashion examples of the decade such as garçonne look, flapper look, and robe de style. Also, it analyzed the design elements and derived the external forms of 1920s romantic style and modern style through the positivistic case study based on data collection. Lastly, this thesis inquired the intrinsic value of each style and compared them based on the theoretical and empirical consideration. The results of this study are as follows: 1920s romantic style and modern style had similarities in some intrinsic value, such as breaking taboo on exposing women's body parts, change in ideal beauty on a figure and liberation from suppression of the body. These similarities also led to similarities on external form. Both style had hem line rising up to ankle length, low waistline, and straight tubular bodice. There were also many design elements and materials which expose the body, and undergarments and body shape foundations were simplified. These similarities could be said as the characteristics of the period style that various fashion style in the 1920s have in common. 1920s romantic style and modern style also had differences on each external form based on different intrinsic value. The intrinsic values of 1920s romantic style was nostalgia for the pre-war era, backlash against suppressed traditional femininity, gap between normal women and ideal model, haute-couture culture in Europe, reflection of the old-fashioned behavioral pattern and values, and class distinction and conspicuous consumption. Meanwhile, 1920s modern style was based on the intrinsic values of the entry of women in public affairs and consequential pursuit of rationality and practicality, mass production system and technological advance, influence of art déco and jazz, pursuit functionality for sport and leisure craze, breakaway from the old-fashioned behavioral pattern and values, and the pursuit of sexual freedom and equality. Therefore, 1920s romantic style and modern style were expressed in different external forms. 1920s romantic style was characterized with feminine silhouette skirt made high quality fabrics such as silk and decorative materials. Soft pastel color and staid toned-down color were also usually used. In terms of decorative details, three-dimensional flower and ribbon, handicraft details, and gathering or shirring were mainly see. In terms of structural details, there were used of shawl and cape-shaped details, outline extension with see-through materials, and overskirt. On the other hand, 1920s modern style was characterized with vertically straight or slightly flare skirt usually made with artificial silk(rayon), or functional and practical materials such as cotton and jersey. Bright colors, mono-tone colors, and skin tone colors were also used a lot for modern style. In terms of decorative details, flat surface decoration, geometric pattern and straight pleats were mainly shown. In terms of structural details, variation of cutting and details borrowed from men's wear were used a lot. For evening dresses, exceptionally intricate embellishment and decoration, fluttering panels, and handkerchief hem line were used. These differences between romantic style and modern style of the 1920s fashion could be said as the characteristics of the genre style that each style has. This research showed that periodic changes in fashion had been told focusing only on the mainstream style of the time. That is why this thesis studied not only the cutting edge of fashion by the influential people in the society but also the relatively unnoticed and more realistic fashion style that many people, regardless of social statues, wore at the time. In conclusion, this study showed that even though the 1920s had gone through a radical change, both romantic style and modern style were still in fashion and co-existed. They sometimes formed eclecticism style when mixed together. This co-existence and eclecticism were interpreted as a specific aspect of fashion style's continuative and gradual transition on a diachronic point of view. In the 1920s, fashion was spread by haute-couture or the establishments and universality still predominated. Despite that, because of mass production of ready-to-wear, mail order, development of sewing equipment and distribution of paper patterns, normal and daily clothing in various style were able to be in fashion. This thesis provides an opportunity to give a new perspective to the romantic style fashion in the 1920s. In addition, this thesis also suggests a possibility of reevaluation of the 1920s modern style, by a different approach from the pre-existing interpretation of the 1920s fashion. Lastly, this thesis will be able to be used as research material, to shows important examples of fashion style's continuative and gradual transition.
