A Study on the Design Culture of Korean Middle-class home in the 90s : : Focused on the advertisement of the monthly magazine 원문보기

The material abundance in the 1990s increased middle-class households that had been previously considered as the target to boost. The increased middle class formed a group that led the then consumer culture. The present paper raises a question about the role of design in constructing the image of the middle-class households that led the consumer culture at that time. This study analyzed the artefacts representing the middle-class households in the 90s, and how the middle class and the artefacts were related, with intent to shed light on the design culture of Korean middle-class households in the 90s by means of the advertisements placed in the monthly magazine「House Full of Happiness」. This study defined three types of Korean middle-class households. The first type is the upper middle class largely resided in culture houses at the time of modernization. The then middle class was a group that created a fantasy and a target that should be boosted, and was oriented toward the West. The second type is the homogeneous middle class of interest here. This type of middle class emerged against the backdrop of democratization and economic boom, mostly residing in apartment houses. The pervasiveness of units of a size and a structure drove the then middle class to long for homogeneity, with the foregoing fantasy transforming to a dream that could be realized in virtue of economic development. The third type is the heterogeneous middle class that has emerged since the economic crisis, which stimulates their sense of being alienated. To derive the characteristics of middle-class design culture, this study analyzed the advertisements showing middle-class families. The analysis of ads was largely focused on their forms and contents. The analysis of forms was focused on the forms of middle-class families portrayed in ads and those of space and artefacts. Notably, one-child families outnumbered others in ads, which mirrored a disparity from the traditional families. The family space including living rooms or kitchens accounted for the highest percentage of the forms of space presented in ads. The artefacts representing the middle class were mostly ornamental ones such as picture frames and plant pots. The analysis of ad contents was focused on the product groups represented via middle-class families and the appeals indicative of the image of middle-class families. Middle-class families appeared most in food ads, particularly drinks including coffee or juice. By 1995 right before the foreign exchange crisis, emotional appeals accounted for a high percentage, with ‘love’ being the most frequently used emotional appeal. The present findings highlight three aspects of the design culture in Korean middle-class families in the 1990s. First, the appreciation of art, non-productive labor and leisure activities including taking care of pets and plants signified they were taking a breather from hectic life. Such activities are perceived as separate from livelihood and as the means of displaying their economic and cultural capital. Second, the middle-class family lifestyle mediated the settlement of a new culture, which was attributable to the influx of a new living culture associated with a new residential environment of apartment houses. The new living culture was sub-divided into Western food culture, stand-up lifestyles, use of new indoor space and routine use of technology. Finally, middle-class families were characterized by mixed identities, where opposed attributes were displayed simultaneously. That is, they sought something new while still stressing traditional aspects, and emphasized reasonable consumption while stimulating conspicuous consumption. The types of middle-class families defined here constantly influenced one another and formed a unique design culture. Given the diverse definitions of the middle class, it remains questionable whether the present findings from the analysis of advertisements could be generalizable to the design culture of the entire middle-class households in the 90s. Still, the present study on design artefacts representing the middle-class families driving the consumer culture in the 90s will serve as a significant record of Korean design history and that of Korean history from narrow and broad perspectives, respectively.
