Biogas derived from anaerobic digestion of organic matter has a high value for economical renewable energy sources. Liquified biomethane, which has enhanced storage capacity and transportability compared to biogas, is obtainable via purification and cryogenic liquefaction, and available to use for transportation fuel. In this research, liquefied biomethane was produced from the biogas generated in the anaerobic digester by installing a pilot with a capacity of 1,000 gallon/day. The characteristics of biogas was analyzed for the design of the pilot, and the data, including the concentration of methane, carbon dioxide, moisture, hydrogen sulfide, volatile organic matter and siloxane, was obtained. Desulfurization, water removal, adsorption, and carbon dioxide separation processes were examined in various ways to obtain high purity biomethane that can be fed into a cryogenic liquefaction process, and a purification process suitable for the pilot was selected. In the cryogenic liquefaction process, a reverse Brayton cycle using nitrogen as a refrigerant was applied.. The pilot plant, which combines the purification process and the cryogenic liquefaction process, was installed at Sudokwon Landfill site and succeeded in producing liquefied biomethane through commissioning and optimization. The liquefied biomethane produced showed a purity of 99.84%, a calorific value of 9,540 kcal/Nm3, and an energy consumption of 2.07kW/Nm3 methane. As a result of economical evaluation of liquefied biomethane produced, it was found that the minimum capacity of biogas facility for economizing liquefaction biomethane should be 12,600 Nm3 / day of biogas production. In order to carry out the liquefied biomethane business for anaerobic digestion facilities of lesser scale, we proposed appropriate government subsidies according to the size of anaerobic digestion facilities at the price of selling liquefied biomethane.
