Speech rate is studied in various fields of speech therapy. In particular, much interest is shown in fluency disorder. Most studies measure the quantity of words during a given time from the perspective of the speaker to measure the level of progress in treating stuttering. However, speech rate, despite being evaluated and classified by the listener, is viewed by most studies from the perspective of mathematic speech rate. This study reviews the effect of one’s own speech rate on the perception of speech rate among many elements that may affect the listener’s perception of speech rate and seeks to provide data that would be helpful to speech therapy. Thirty-nine adults aged 20∼30 (19 males and 20 females) were used as subject to conduct an experiment on reading assignments (the front paragraph of “Autumn”, a total of 134 syllables) and measure the speech rate in accordance with the gender. The average speech rate measured and standard deviation were used to categorize into different speech rate groups. Two experiment tasks that measured the perception of difference in speech rate and the perception of one’s own speech rate were used to review the difference between speech rate perception (by oneself, in an assignment) and self-realization evaluation across different speech rate groups. The study findings were as follows. First, there was a difference in speech rate across different genders in the reading assignment. Men’s speech rate (5.47±0.48 SPS) was faster than women’s speech rate (5.08±0.50 SPS). Second, in terms of speech rate perception evaluation, one’s own speech rate and the speech rate assignment were evaluated. Both men and women in each speech rate group perceived their own speech rate within a similar category and there was no difference in perception across different speech rate groups. Meanwhile, in the speech rate assignment perception, different results were found for men and women. Men in a slower speech rate group perceived the speech rate to be faster than it actually was when handed an assignment with slow or moderate rate. Women did not show any difference in perception of speech rate assignment across different groups. An application of the chi-square test to the evaluation of one’s own speech rate perception showed that there was no significant difference in men or women, but both men and women in the faster speech rate group had a tendency to perceive their own speech rate as moderate. The slower speech rate group perceived the slow speech rate assignment as faster than it actually is compared to other groups, while the faster speech rate group perceived the fast speech rate assignment as slower than other groups did. Third, when chi-square test was applied to the speech rate self-realization evaluation, a different result was found for men and women. Women showed no difference in the self-realization evaluation of speech rate across different speech rate groups, men were more self-realization of a specific speech rate and showed a different result than in perception. Bringing together the above findings the following conclusion can be reached. First, the speech rate of adults has difference across genders. A comparison of the speech rate average in preceding studies showed that the speech rate average varied depending on the content of the reading assignment and the speech calculation length. This indicates that the content of the reading assignment and the amount of speech calculation can be variables in measuring speech rate. To set a standard for speech rate, the same content and speech calculation quantity would have to be established. Second, one’s own speech rate affected the speech rate perception (one’s own speech, assignment). In particular, men were more affected by their own speech rate than women. Third, women had the same perception and self-realization, while for men different results were found for perception and self-realization. This indicates that a different sensory memory, cognition or process is used when perceiving and self-realizing. These findings are expected to present the need for setting the standard for speech rate not only from the speaker’s perspective but also from the listener’s perspective, while providing treatment intervention that reflects the speech rate of the subject in clinical settings for a more effective speech therapy mediation.
