The Handover of Hong Kong in 1997 was a significant moment marking Hong Kong entered a new stage of identity reconstruction. In the decolonialization of post-1997 Hong Kong, the problem that whether to be a part of “China” or to be “Hong Kong itself” has become a dilemma for Hong Kong people. During the 20 years after the Handover, even though Chinese government maintains capitalism system of Hong Kong under the “one country, two systems” policy, oppositions and conflicts of different social ideologies and different economic systems between Hong Kong and China are having a tremendous and continual impact on the identity transformation of Hong Kong. The most important and difficult issue for Hong Kong people after 1997, is the identity transformation where the citizens have to learn to become nationals of a country. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find the answer to the question that how Hong Kong people regard their identity in the post-1997 era.
The thesis aims to study on the identity issue of Hong Kong by analyzing the narrative structures of Hong Kong films on two approaches as follow. One is individual or collective experience in the past and another one is the way of looking at the relation with the Other. According to the theoretical background, four Hong Kong films made by Hong Kong directors after 1997 are analyzed to figure out the identity of Hong Kong by focusing on the issues of memory and otherness. The objects of study are two nostalgic films showing the collective memory and two films which represent the relationship with mainland China after 1997. Based on the two approaches, the films are analyzed by semiotic text analysis and context analysis. The Greimas actantial model is also applied to explore the subject consciousness and character relations in these films.
First, from the perspective of time and past, Echoes of the Rainbow(2010) and Golden Chicken Series(2002)(2003)(2014) are analyzed on the representation of the past of Hong Kong from 1960s to 2000s. Echoes of the Rainbow tells a story about how a Hong Kong family in 1960s overcame difficulties in their life. The story shows a Hong Kong society integrating the traditional atmosphere and the western lifestyle in 1960s. The film manifests that Hong Kong which was considered as a shelter of refugees in 1960s is now regarded as the ‘hometown’ of Hong Kong people. Golden Chicken Series represents the collective memory and "Hong Kong spirit" about the golden age of Capitalist society in Hong Kong during 1970-90s through the individual experience of a prostitute Kam. It is known from these two films that the British colonial society and golden age of capitalist society in the past Hong Kong are considered as the nostalgic objects and the origin where the pride of Hongkongness comes from. The narrative with Hongkong-oriented perspective is one kind of the counter narrative against the grand narrative which forces Hong Kong story to bind Chinese history together.
Second, from another perspective of the Other and self, the relationship of Hong Kong people and Chinese people is explored by analyzing Night and Fog(2009) and Love in the Buff(2012). These two films show post-1997 Hong Kong has tried to establish a relationship with mainland China on two ways. Night and Fog is about a failed experience of Hong Kong man who is anxious to dominate his mainland wife. Love in the Buff tells a story that Hong Kong people go to Beijing to pursue economic benefit and imagine the mainland China as "the land of fortunes". Even though Hong Kong imagined itself as a stronger power after 1997 comparing with mainland China, today a power reversal occurred since Hong Kong is becoming a part of China and mainland china emerged as a superpower of the world. It is known that characters from Hong Kong in the films are showing a feeling of resistance on the power reversal. At the same time, the films demonstrate the locals in Hong Kong are yet struggling to maintain the subjectivity state with a sense of superiority established from their past experience. In conclusion, the identity reconstruction of post-1997 Hong Kong is conflictive and unstable. Hong Kong people on the one hand are anxious to memorize the colonial history and the brilliant past that capitalism economy of Hong Kong was booming during 1970-90s, and on the other hand are struggling to keep mainland China as the Other in a distance. This narrative structure is a way to show confrontation of Hong Kong people to the identity crisis that superiority of Hong Kong disappeared under the impact of mainland China.
