Fuel cells are attracting attention as an environmentally frienfdly, high-efficiency energy source. However, the production cost is so large that it is difficult to commercialize it. To solve this problem, a new type of fuel cell called a microfluidic fuel cell has been studied since 2000s. The microfluidic fuel cell is a device that produces electric energy through oxidization and reduction reaction at each electrode, where fuel and oxidizer are mixed only by diffusion for the Co-laminar characteristics. There are advantages such as reduction of processing cost and miniaturization, but it is still difficult to commercialize. The main reason is that an external power source is needed to drive the microfluidic fuel cell. Therefore, the need of external power source should be improved, and the evaluation of the electricity production performance according to fuel and electrode material should be concretely performed. In this study, we developed the microfluidic fuel cell driven by osmotic pump that does not require an external power source. In order to select suitable fuel and electrode for the system of this study, it was necessary to study various fuels and electrodes. Therefore, we compared the performance using methanol and vanadium as the fuel, and compared the performance according to the type of electrode(at this time, the flow rate is set to 3.45 µL/min). As a result of the study using vanadium as the fuel, the highest current density of 7 mA/cm2 and the open circuit voltage of 1.2 V were obtained. This study shows the methods to improve the fuel consumption efficiency and miniaturize the microfluidic fuel cell system, and thus suggest the possibility of commercialization.
