The current study assessed the explicit and implicit attitudes regarding moral self-concept and violence in individuals who scored high in dating violence offending tendency. Moreover, the difference in explicit and implicit attitudes between groups who scored high and low in dating violence offending tendency and the relationship between these attitudes were also explored. In order to measure the level of dating violence offending experience of potential participants, the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS-2) was used. The 39 university students who scored in the upper and lower 20 percent in the CTS-2 and who agreed to participate in the secondary experiment were selected as participants. When the selected participants undertook the Implicit Association Test (IAT), the between-group difference in the violence IAT was not significant. However, the between-group difference in the morality IAT was statistically significant (t(37)=2.65, p <.05). In other words, the group who scored high in dating violence offending tendencies had stronger moral self-concepts compared to the group who scored low in dating violence offending tendencies. The result of this study is as follows. As the group who scored high in dating violence offending tendencies had stronger moral self-concepts, the inconsistency between the behavior and the moral self-concept of this group in comparison to the group who scored low in dating violence offending tendency was found. This study suggests a novel approach to correctional education which emphasizes morality and discourages illegal activities using morality related grounds. The need for preventative psychological interventions, program development and research was also discussed along with the limitations of the current study and suggestion for future research.
