The thesis suggested a method to correct existing NC machining tool-paths by considering the modified shape of a die surface, which is useful for reproducing molding or stamping dies whose machined surface has been modified through test procedures before mass production. In general, a die surface is fabricated by NC machining where the tool-paths are generated based on the designed CAD model. The physical die surface may be modified by grinding afterwards, due to several trials or test injections. Therefore, being requested duplication of a physical die, it is needed to generate whole new NC tool-paths considering the modified surface. However, the method requires time consuming job. As an alternative, correction of existing NC tool-paths can be applied. The tool-path correction procedures can be summarized as follows: (1) CAD surface modification via digitizing of physical die surface. (2) NC tool-path correction via cutter offset surface generation. In the study, the physical die surface is digitized by white light 3D scanner and the design surface is modified by the digitized surface model. The tool-paths that are needed to be corrected should be chosen via boundary curve of the modified region on the surface. The tool offset surface of the modified surface is generated, and the corresponding tool-path curves are projected on the offset surface to correct the cutter location points. The suggested method has been implemented on CATIA V5 system, in the Windows system. It is expected to reduce work time for regenerate corrected tool-paths for modified physical die surface. In addition, the methodology can be applied to arbitrary cutter shape only by considering cutter offset surface generation.
