This study investigated characteristics of visual attention to stimulus without conscious awareness. Moreover, the study evaluated an application of these characteristics for the adult ADHD detection. Conscious awareness of the visual stimulus were suppressed using continuous flash suppression(CFS). In CFS, one eye is presented with a static stimulus, while the other eye is presented with a series of rapidly changing stimuli. To trigger CFS, a mirror stereoscope, anaglyph glasses, and a head-mounted display were used. The Experiment 1 and 2 investigated whether the devices can be validated by measuring the duration of stimulus suppression and the effect of attention without conscious awareness. In Experiment 3, when performing the change detection task, characteristics of attention of visual stimulus without conscious awareness were evaluated. In Experiment 4, an eye tracker was employed to measure more sensitive and natural responses for visual stimulus without conscious awareness and to evaluate the characteristics that were difficult to identify by using key press responses. The eye movements data is widely used as a major dependent variable and represent visual attention. The Experiment 5 examined whether the detection of adult ADHD by using characteristics of visual sensory processing without conscious awareness were suitable. The performances were compared by employing two-alternative forced choice(2AFC) task presented invisible cues and continuous performance test(CPT) used at the clinical sites. The results of the study are as follows. Experiment 1 revealed that the type of devices to trigger CFS did not affect the duration of stimulus suppression. Moreover, the more trials, the less suppression time is similar to each device. The results of Experiment 2 showed that even if the participants do not aware the visual stimulus, it affects information processing. It is reasonable to use CFS employing anaglyph glasses and a head-mounted display. Experiment 3 showed that visual stimulus without conscious awareness significantly affects change detection task performance. A method was used to compared the results of performances among different conscious awareness level of cue stimulus. In this way, the quantitative effect of attention and consciousness in information processing were presented. This result support prior studies that asserted that attention and consciousness had different function and neural mechanism. In Experiment 4, the eye movement patterns showed that there were significant differences between the conditions. These results matched with the results of change detection task performance in Experiment 3. When presenting visual stimulus without conscious awareness, the participants showed overt attention to target. However, these patterns were different from perfect over attention for visual stimulus with conscious awareness. Thus, further research is necessary. The results of Experiment 5 showed that CPT had no differences between adult ADHD tendency group and controls. Moreover, there were small and non-significant correlations between the CPT variables and subscales of the CAARS-K. Thus, the validity of the CPT usage could be questioned. The results of 2AFC task showed that there were significantly different the correct answer rate and the detectability in a comparison between the groups. Adults with ADHD traits tended to show deficits of visual sensory processing without conscious awareness. These findings can be used as an indices for adult ADHD detection. In summary, this study allows us to conclude that visual stimulus without conscious awareness summons attention, even when it is not perceived consciously. The attention affect information processing and eye movement. Moreover, it is possible to measure the quantitative effect of attention and consciousness in information processing. This result are a step ahead of prior literatures as it asserts that attention and consciousness are distinct phenomena. Adults with ADHD traits show a specific deficit in visual sensory processing without conscious awareness. These results also have theoretical and clinical implications for ADHD in adults and help to understand the actual mechanisms of attention deficits in ADHD.
