Abstract The development study of voice training program for vocalist using basic theory of laryngology, phoniatrics and logopedics
Choi, Chan-ho Department of Performance, Film & Animation The Graduate School Sejong University Recently, TV audition programs are gaining sensational popularity, enjoying its heyday in Korea. Since most of the programs are dealing with ordinary people competing their talents, more and more people are interested in vocalists these days. However, this trend is often led to vocal cord diseases by using voice too much. In particular, the sensitive youth are more interested in the audition programs which may expose them to vocal cord diseases more easily without a professional training. However, the vocalization method for vocalists in practical music still lack a systematic program and well-trained trainers which results in lack of proper vocalization education. In addition, not a few students experience a severe vocal cord disease by using improper data or information for vocalization. Therefore, this study is aimed at suggesting a systematic vocal training program for vocalists and prove the effect scientifically in terms of practical music. Before the experiments, the study examined bel canto method, the oldest vocalization method, and Alexander Technique which is a relaxation training, saw what is the same and what is different to the vocal training using the basic theory of medical science of guttural sound language, and applied a part of the training to the experiment. For the experiment, the researcher selected 4 male students and 4 female students in the department of vocalist at college of practical music in the capital area, and they joined a vocal training program for 7 weeks. The first step of the program helped the vocalists understand anatomic features of the vocal organs and the principle. In step 2, the vocalists became aware of their vocalization while singing through video laryngeal stroboscopy test, video laryngoscopy test, perceptual evaluation, acoustic evaluation, electro laryngo graphy(EGG), pitch range evaluation, aerodynamic evaluation, and nasality evaluation. In the last step, the vocalists received the vocal training using the basic theory of medical science of guttural sound language. In the 7th week, the vocalists who joined the experiment went through the vocalization test again to compare their vocalization before and after the training. Despite the short training period, most of the vocalists showed improved vocalization ability. The problems each of the vocalists had, which are narrowness of hypopharynx and larynx, light vocal cord nodules, and glottal gap, were decreased significantly. Moreover, the results of aerodynamic evaluation and pitch range evaluation were significantly increased proving the effect of the vocal training program on the vocalists. This study is meaningful as the first data that proved the change of vocalization ability with scientific indexes after the vocal training program using the basic theory of medical science of guttural sound language both inside and outside Korea. However, there is a limitation to generalize the problems the participants had to be shared by all vocalists due to the low diversity of the participants. In addition, some of the students showed no change even after the training which is that they were not able to control their state of tension. Follow-up studies shall study more diverse vocalists and there shall be a training to relax the participants to improve the vocal training program.
